Monty is a pretty big step down from Nola in terms of immediate quality. If AA is going to settle for a #3 I’d want a much cheaper one than the predicted contracts for Monty.

I agree, but I really question the predicted contract for Montgomery. For some reason (and I'm probably wrong), I think that Montgomery is going to one of the guys on the outside looking in as the bigger contracts are signed.
 
If we were willing to give more than $25 million a year for Nola, a 9 year deal for $225 million would be perfectly reasonable for Yamamoto.

He will only be 34 when the contract expires. Gray is ALREADY 34.

You want to give a 9 year deal at #2 money to someone that hasn't pitched in MLB?
 
Wonder if that takes Phillies out of it on snell. Surely they won't tie up even more on snell with wheeler on the market next year
 
The funny thing is Charlie Morton make 20 millions each of the last 3 years I believe…

In 7 years 24 millions for a 37 year old is not that bad. Probably market value…

This is strictly player dependent though. Morton has proven useful at his age, and stringing together a bunch of one year deals is far less risky than a guaranteed long-term deal.

He got paid more for the team not assuming long term risk. It is not the same thing. 7 years for any pitcher is a big risk. Look at the top pitchers 7 years ago then now. Theres not a lot of overlap.

Probably he get paid less the first 2 years and more during the end of that contract.

I do think years over AAV is the primary determinant for Anthopoulos. As pointed out with Morton, he'll go above perceived value on AAV as long as the term is right. He's deviated from that with the core offensive players (and we'll see how that turns out), but his approach on pitching seems to revolve around one- and two-year deals with a healthy AAV.
