8:20 Could you venture a guess as to what AA is trying to accomplish after last week's transactions?

8:20 Ten picks in the Rule 5 Draft

Can it really be that simple? Are there 10 guys worth grabbing?

I’d doubt it. He’ll add 3 or 4 guys for the MlB team and then get some depth for the minors.

I know it would be an underwhelming signing to say the least but I have a feeling Giolito is gonna be a Brave.
If the Braves don’t want to pay the price in picks or money for Gray and want to get an innings eater with the bonus of making Max happy then I could see them adding him.
I know Stroman makes more sense but maybe AA pivots if the SP market is overpriced and adds Giolito and then uses his big money on one of the bats on the market.
I wouldn’t like it but could see it happen with the expectation of going after a number 2 starter next year unless you resign Max.

That must have been a joke. The problem with Rule 5 picks is that they have to stay on the 26-man or be offered back to the other team. I wouldn't be surprised if the scouting staff saw one or two guys worth drafting, but would they beat out any of the guys slated to be on the active roster?

I found it odd that they unloaded everyone they did, especially the guys that could have gone on the 60-day IL (Wright, Perdomo) at the end of spring training.

Giolito will be a 1 year deal sort of guy (probably with a mutual option) to rebuild his value. So I doubt he really factors in to whether or not we sign someone like Gray, Stroman, or E-Rod.

In fact, I would say that is the very reason he won't be someone we will look at, unless we miss on multiple guys. Because that would mean we would be losing 3 starters at the end of next year, assuming he is healthy and pitches well enough to decline the 2nd year option.

From next year, Fried's estimated cost of 25 mm+ plus Ozuna's figure for this year at 18 mm = 43 mm per year. Take those two budget slots and apply to Ohtani. Or replace Fried going forward with Yamamoto at roughly the same price. I'm hopeful we add either and would love to see both.

Yeah, it is really odd. You have to figure a trade is in the works. And certainly trading Fried now seems to be on the table, especially given our interest in signing Nola. Makes you wonder what we could get out of him.

I was looking at the list of free agents across all positions and there are some interesting guys (some of whom are rebound candidates) that would probably be relatively low-cost. I imagine we're going to see a couple of those in addition to a couple of higher-profile guys. And then there are the trade candidates as well.

I would guess that after the major shuffling is done, we'll be in the high-30s, which would leave some room for a non-roster invite or two after spring training. One angle on this is that the Braves didn't have a single Rule 5 eligible player that merited going on the 40-man, so there was no one to fill spots of the non-tendered players.

I could see them signing Brandon Woodruff to a 2 year deal...low salary for year 1 and a larger buyout for year 2 if they decide to cut him.

If he does come back next season after the break, you could be adding an impact arm. If not then it is what it is.

But still need to add at least 1 impact arm to the rotation not including Woodruff as a wild card. Also, with all of the open spots on the 40 man, I don't see us making a large trade as most of our depth pieces are now gone.

Woodruff is essentially in the same boat as Wright. Seems counterintuitive to cut Wright only to sign Woodruff.

Spencer Turnbull seems like a decent sign on a dirt cheap deal. No one was willing to trade anything for him at a projected salary of just 2.4 million, so I would assume he will have to take near league minimum to get a guaranteed deal. Obviously Nick Senzel carries a 1st round pedigree. Would be nice to stash in AAA if given the opportunity.

Nola just wanted to be a Philly. Looks like he’s turned his attention to Gray now. Yamamoto gets posted tomorrow and hopefully we are in the bidding.

According to Scott Lauber the Braves initial offer to Nola was 6/162 and wasn't their final offer.

You'll forgive me if I don't trust the word of a Philly reporter.

Given the nature of most of AAs dealings, I rather doubt that 162 million was all guaranteed.
