Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

The perfect FA pitcher doesn't exist out there. So to sign one of these free agents who might make a difference, something is going to have to be sacrificed – whether it's paying a guy like Montgomery or Stroman a little extra money, or giving a guy that extra guaranteed year, or losing a little international slot money, or being really bold and putting the highest bid in on Yamamoto.

I think Yama is the play but i'm not sure if we'd make the highest offer. He is 25 so you could offer a ton of years, just doubt AA will be close to offering what it takes to land him. But there's plenty of SP's out there to add, plus the trade market with Glasnow and Burnes depending on the cost there.

I don’t see us being aggressive in signing Gray at all. You’re giving up too much for him. I could see Alex prioritizing a trade for one of next year’s big free agent pitchers and extending him. If you land a big name and he doesn’t want to extend before January, I’d put in an aggressive offer for Yamamoto. From there, I’d extend either your new pitcher or Fried before the trade deadline. If neither extend, you have options at the deadline.

I also don’t think they’re that serious about stretching out Lopez. AA seems to like for other teams to know he’s comfortable and doesn’t have any needs. It gives him leverage with other GMs. It’s the same with Grissom in left.

They're not going into the year with this rotation as is. AA will add someone else. Maybe it's not Gray, but there's plenty of guys on the market that he can get if he's offering 6/162 to Nola. Lopez is a good addition, as a flexible piece to the bullpen and rotation but he's not the lone addition. We also still need to add to the offense, need an infielder bench piece, and someone else for the outfield. As well as another starter even if it's not Gray.

Agreed. There’s numerous great options out there, and AA will find someone solid to slot in.

Still hoping for Cease on the trade market. Yama is still the SP on the FA market I’m hoping for.

I read an article the other day that said the Dodgers were really going hard after Cease. I do think the White Sox will trade him as they are in full re-build mode. I have no idea what it will take to get him. Dodgers have more trade chips, but it's always about the match-up.

I saw that too. If we can’t get Cease from them then Robert would definitely take care of LF for the next few years.

Robert would cost a ton, but would be totally worth it. However, i think we need a LH bat or at least someone full-time in LF going forward. Starting point for Robert is probably like Grissom/AJS+. I dont know if we'd go for Cease b/c he's Boras and they normally dont extend before FA.

It is pretty much the same rotation we went into last year with where we won 104 games with less than half a season from Fried. The main reason we need another SP is for the playoffs. Maybe we could pickup a rental at the trade deadline or someone else steps up like AJSS by then. I would like a game 3 SP but I dont think its a must have at this point anymore. Not spending a lot on another SP does make it more likely we can keep Fried next year.

I dont see us keeping Fried. We did win 104 games last year but regular season and playoffs are two different things. AA will add another SP, a good one between now and ST. Probably before Christmas with how he operates. AA didnt clear 10 roster spots, and some money to do nothing this winter. He also got rid of alot of our SP depth (plus supposedly made a big run at Nola), put two and two together, he's going for a SP. He's already been very active with the PJ/JJ/Lopez deals already.

We have no one to trade them, so probably better move on from that wish.

I'm not saying we'd do it but Waldrep/AJSS/Nacho/Grissom would be a pretty tempting offer. But no chance in hell AA does that.

I hesitate to call any prospect “expendable”, but teams with deep farms can obviously more easily deal guys from it. Braves farm is thin, and that makes Waldrep basically un-tradeable. I could see AJSS being dealt, and Grissom I think is definitely on the table for a deal if the right one comes along (though I’m not sure where his value is).

White Sox got the worst offensive production from 2B in the majors last year. We have something to offer them.

Grissom doesn't have the value most on here think he does. And he's not exactly a guy a rebuilding team would be super interested in given that he's burning service time.

For Robert maybe. It's extremely unlikely that package brings you back Cease and Robert. And as you said, AA isn't making that trade regardless.

I dont think he is a future all star 2B but just being an above average player a couple years from arbitration has a ton of value. I see him more as a second piece in a big trade rather than the main piece which is a problem for us. If we paired Grissom and AJSS or Waldrep I think thats 90% of the trade value we need for someone like Cease. Would just depend on which 2-3 mid level prospects a team liked.

I don’t see why Grissom can’t be Stott or better with the bat. He’s not as good of a defender, but his EVs did go up this year in a limited sample and he’ll only be 23 when the season starts. If he can play solid defense at 2B, he could definitely be a starting-caliber player.
