Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Marco definitely isn’t the answer to the rotation and AA knows it. He’s just depth in case of an injury or to give some guys rest when it gets hot.

I agree we'll probably DFA White at some point, though I suppose Gwinnett does need bodies. He's a 1B-only guy who can't hit -- looking at his minor league stats it's kind of hard to see why the Mariners gave him that contract in the first place.

Gonzales seems like a replacement-level, 5.00 FIP guy at this point. Not completely without value -- at some point during the season you're going to need a guy to throw five innings and give up three runs. But if he's getting consistent starts then something very bad has happened.

I don't think Marco or White served any purpose in this trade other than pure salary dump. They were the cost to get Kelenic.

AA is almost certainly going to grab another starter. That would leave the rotation as Strider, Fried, Morton, to be acquired, and Elder/Lopez. Maybe Marco has some small utility as a long reliever/emergency starter but if there's anything resembling a roster crunch then I expect Marco to be a casualty of it. The guy has very, very little utility.

At this point, I'd rather keep the prospects and sign Stroman or E-Rod, assuming they command reasonable salaries. If we can trade Elder as a centerpiece for a rental ace, then ok. But otherwise, we need the farm to start producing some real talent before we decide to give away what little we have for players who won't be here a year or 2 from now.

Only way we would be in on Ohtani is if ownership stepped in and wanted him and I don’t think they really care much so there’s that.

Acuna Ohtani Riley Olson Albies Murphy/TdA Kelenic Arcia Harris

Fried Strider Cease Morton Gonzalez

That would be a team wet dreams are made of....

I left out Ozuna and Elder assuming that Ozuna would be traded and Elder used in that deal to get rid of his whole salary.

Probably what the cash considerations are for. To offset some of those awful contracts

More likely for the buyouts. The point of including those contracts was to free up payroll for Seattle. They're apparently in a pretty tight situation. So I doubt they sent any meaningful amount of offset the amount we're paying this year.

I have no doubt we're talking to Ohtani, in the same way we probably talk to every big-time free agent we have no real chance of acquiring. Talking doesn't cost anything, nor does tossing around some initial numbers. Anthopolous calling up Ohtani's agent and asking if Ohtani might be interested in one of our short-term, high-AAV specials, only to be politely told, "Thanks, but no thanks" qualifies as "talking to Ohtani."

Liberty Media owns Formula One and has made billions in the international marketplace. They may see an Ohtani signing (and hopefully a Yamamoto signing, too) as moves that would cement the Braves as an international brand. Low, low probability that this happens, but the extra revenue just might be worth it, especially if Ohtani doesn't take the highest offer.

Your almost there.

Kelenic is going to be used to get Cesae. Moving Ozuna to LF so Ohtani can DH
