Official Around Baseball 2023 Thread

34 million ain't what it used to be. I know it's hard to wrap a head around 30-40 mil annually as the new baseline, but that's what we're going to see going forward for your all-star level players. Elite guys like Ohtani and Soto are gonna be north of 40 million most likely. Really makes you appreciate the guys we have locked up.

It's probably not a good idea to tie up that much payroll in an late prime player regardless of whether it's the market rate or not.

If you are forced to get the core of your team that way it's not likely going to go well for you for very long.

Mets owner Steve Cohen giving a press conference. Not really sure why it was necessary. I appreciate he's passionate but it makes me appreciate that we don't have a meddling owner.

It was a weird presser. Everyone knows that they want to hire a president of baseball ops (he tried for two years with no luck). I still can’t believe he would come out and say that to the press and completely cuck Eppler by saying Eppler knows his place.

I don't think it's any secret they are waiting on David Stearns contract with the Brewers to end.

I like his explanation about firing mid-season and that leading to guys not wanting to come to the organization. While I do get that in some aspect, money is king, and cash speaks volumes.

You see what happened with the Braves after Snitker took over for Gonzalez and with the Phillies after Girardi was fired. Sometimes a different tone or approach can be a catalyst for a team.

I love seeing him commit to mediocrity this season.

To be fair, Buck has been there a year and a half and last year won manager of the year in the NL. Would they really consider firing him half a season later??? There's no guarantee the next option would be any better with this roster.

Personally, I like Buck as a manager. But with underperformance of the team as a whole, him and Eppler are the ones who wear the brunt of that guilt.

I'm curious to see what they do at the deadline. Seems like he is more apt to stay put and no make any additions or major subtractions if they are out of it.

In July, they face the Giants, D-Backs, Padres before the All Star break. Then the Dodgers, White Sox, Red Sox, Yankees, and Nationals leading up until the trade deadline. Not sure they do better than about .500 in that stretch

Throwing a perfect game against the A’s in Oakland is the equivalent of throwing a perfect game in spring training in a split squad game.

With how weak the Central divisions are in both leagues this year (and how one division is always weaker in both leagues every year), should MLB adopt the NFL playoff bracketing where the number 1 seed gets the lowest seed remaining after the league quarterfinals?

Or should the 1 seed get to choose who they want to play from the two teams who advanced to the league semifinals?

I agree. The Mets aren't really underachieving considering they are completely reliant on two 40 year olds to anchor their rotation. And not only have those 2 guys been unavailable for much of the season, but even when they have pitched they've been mediocre. You can place the blame directly on the FO for spending 100 million on 2 really old pitchers.

And honestly, it looks like they lucked up with Correa's failed medicals. Too bad for us. Another 30+ million dead anchor would have been pretty glorious.
