he would lose that money too. although, baseball contracts are like steel binding agreements and the player can do whatever he wants afterwards..

If he gets jail time, i'm sure he'd be suspended for at least the sentence if not longer at which point he would not be paid. But unless the Rays were able to void the contract they would be responsible for whatever the remainder of the contract would be.

It really is an unprecedented situation. Bauer and Vazquez both had their situations play out here in the states.

Hector Gomez tweeted that according to people with direct knowledge of the investigation they don’t think he will ever play again.

He’s made less than $1m of his $180m contract and Fangraphs ranked him 2nd in the trade value list. What a waste.

If he isn't indicted either here or in the DR, I don't think the Rays will have much hope of getting out of it. Even an indictment may not be enough if he is found not guilty or agrees to a lesser charge. Same with Baurer for LA. Only money they will get back is the for time he inevitably spends on suspension.

Don’t think we’ve ever seen a career for a guy this young just abruptly end. Jose Fernandez, while much different circumstances, is the closest we’ve got. This is a generational player at just 22 years old, career over.

the only other one I can think of is Hector Olivera.. just threw all his talent away..

I think he’s the only 80 FV Fangraphs has ever hung on a prospect.

In the states, statutory rape is a strict liability offense. It usually doesn't matter if the girl had a fake ID and a note from her priest, there's no mens rea element (criminal intent or state of mind), only actus rea (the actual physical act that's a crime). So if you did the act, you're guilty.

Not sure what the laws in the Dominican are.

Personally I loathe strict liability criminal offenses. The mens rea is what makes you culpable and deserving of punishment.

I'll be interested to see how this plays out. When the girl is 14 it's hard to believe that there was nothing that would tip you off that you might want some evidence of her age.

That’s crazy.

The Los Angeles Angels are calling up first baseman Nolan Schanuel, who they took with the 11th overall pick in the draft less than six weeks ago and was in Double-A, sources tell ESPN. The 21-year-old from Florida Atlantic is hitting .370/.510/.493 in 21 minor league games.

Nolan Schanuel was seen as perhaps the most big league-ready hitter in this draft, with incredible production (.447/.615/.868 with 71 walks and 14 strikeouts in 289 PA) at FAU. But this fast a promotion exceeds the loftiest expectations. Angels doing everything they can to win.

why are the Angel so dumb.. starting the clock of a 1st round pick in a lost season.. they already botched the deadline..just like the friars did. Now they are doubling down the dumb.

I don’t think there was actually any ill intent on Alonso’s part, he’s just a ****ing idiot.

Who does that?

Gator or not, no one's ever accused Alonso of being a terribly bright guy. And I'm guessing that whoever picked up that ball in the stands ended up turning it over to the Cardinals about 10 minutes later.

When has any player launched a ball in the stands after a hit like that. That was intentional because he is a big baby who doesn’t like being on a losing team. He should be embarrassed
