Official CBA Negotiation Thread

so that ain't happening unless you just don't go and isn't one of the options

well, unless you can convince the people that are making 10 billion dollars and shutting down a season to make 10.1 billion dollars (a made up number but you get the point) to make 9.9 billion dollars instead to pay their employees properly and help out the little people that help pay for all of it to happen

but this is america, so we know that ain't gonna happen

True. Maybe we should for a fans' union. We could call it Only Fans.

Please tell you aren't basing the profitability owning a team on yearly cash flows?

You do realize the Braves were bought in 2007 for $400M and are now estimated to worth $1.8B (that's billion), right? You realize money making endeavors like The Battery only exist due to the ownership of the Braves, right?

The appreciation in value for these franchises and the ancillary benefits of owning a pro sports team is where the true profit lies.

Yes I realize that. Most don’t. Most just think they break even every year.

I am willing to accept less money and have done so in my life a bunch

makes things better across the board for everyone and done it for other benefits as well

greed fuels capitalism and ironically it's what is going to destroy it too

but as i've said, this is america. so, it ain't gonna happen

Maybe we should try the Venezuelan model......

I am not taking sides in this - well, yes I am- but I just want baseball back. But since I am taking sides, I am of the opinion that the players make an absurd amount of money already. If the owners want to break the union, then break em. And for good— so this never happens again.

This is an owner-initiated lockout, so what you’re saying makes no sense.

It’s hilarious how folks find it unfathomable that players should be rich by monetizing their skills, yet it’s perfectly acceptable for owners to be even richer by monetizing their skills. As if the dumb jocks don’t deserve to be rich like the spoiled trust fund kids, despite literally being the product the baseball business is selling.

The logical inconsistency in that “reasoning” always makes me chuckle…and feel a little bad for the folks who are dense enough to believe it.

I can never decide whether to wear my McGuirk or Malone jersey.

it's so awesome getting to see them when they have their meeting to show off their earnings reports.

that's so much better than the idiots that go to see Acuńa hit homeruns

It's what the kids can't get enough of:

I think they met today.

Latest I’ve read is the players are now offering 14 team playoffs in an effort to nudge the owners to give more in the CBTT area.

The other thing I’ve read is they are attempting to dial down playing this out over Twitter, and want to be a little more professional about this whole thing. The bulk of the energy spent on this fiasco so far has been to control the narrative on social media, and hopefully now that damage has been done by losing real games both sides will stop with the nonsense and get a deal hammered out.

That sounds good to me. Just get a dang deal done

I hope the 14 team thing is only this year.

I really really do not want half the league automatically in the playoffs.

the NBA playoffs take 2 months.

I won’t bother watching the regular season religiously. Why would I? We’re basically guaranteed to make the playoffs if that happens. And if something catastrophic takes place and we’re not good enough to make it in, I mean obviously I won’t be watching then anyway because that means we’re pretty damn terrible.

That’s the whole point of the expanded playoffs, to introduce as much randomness as possible to the process of determining a champion. The more randomness is involved, the less incentive there is to spend money to improve a team’s chances of winning. Teams like the Dodgers and Yankees spending $50M for an extra 2% chance at the title is a very effective way to get more money into the pockets of players.

There are ways to incentivize winning (and spending) by giving better teams advantages in the playoffs, which is why the players are fighting for playoff structures like ghost wins in the early rounds.
