Official Draft Day, Post-Draft Thread

someone will take him later round and see if there is a way to move money around to meet his demands. But ultimately he will go back to school. If he is looking for 3 million, that will be hard for anyone outside the top 3 to do at this point.

I could see the Braves scraping together $1M+ and saying "do you want to be a pro or not?"

If my son had major injury issues and someone offered him $1M to pitch professionally, I would slap him for turning it down.

Definitely worth a shot to add another legit SP prospect.

If you take him later, there isn't as much slot money to move toward other signings.

Bacon may have leverage with the 4-year college commitment, but my guess is the Braves don't draft him without an agreement in principle in place.

Anyone drafted in the first ten rounds is pretty dead certain to sign because of the bonus pool forfeiture. They have an idea of what it will take, but I think it will be more than college senior money. Probably significantly underslot.

Just looking at slot values, a setup where he's still at least slightly possible could be signing Wright for $5.4 mil (300k underslot) and Waters for $2 mil (300k overslot). Sign Tarnok for 500k (200k underslot) and Bacon for 300k (200k) underslot. Draft Beck in the 5th (365k slot). Punt the rest of the top 10 with 10k and 5k senior signings, save about 700k more. Let's us give him around $1.5 mil before considering the 5% overage penalty zone we could go into. Just a thought, as Wright probably doesn't go underslot, though I think a 300k discount for his favorite team doesn't sound completely unbelievable.

Yes. More than college senior money.

Muh guy Tanner Burns still available. Would have taken Nick Allen in the third and Burns in the 4th. For 5th round I would take HS OF Daniel Cabrera. Should have plenty of extra slot money to sign him to an overslot deal.

He's got another year of leverage, he was rated a top five pick at one time, and he's attending Stanford. I'd tell my kid to make his own decision. Hard to go wrong.

They are probably going to save a lot more money in rounds 3-10 than they are with Wright and Waters. Their 5% overage is nearly $500k, so it is plausible they could be drafting enough cheap guys to get to some pre-determined value agreed to between Beck and the Braves (as we heard whispers about).

Remember the Shanks article saying we were locked in on Beck and would be taking more hitters this year?

Someone deleted all of the non-pitcher tabs from the Braves draft spreadsheet.

ALL THE PITCHERS!

It may not be Beck, but I'm thinking our 11th rounder is gonna be the next really interesting guy. We look to be going heavy underslot from now through round 10, we should have a good chunk of change relative to other teams at the top of the order to spend in the 11th/12th.

He can attend Stanford at any point. In fact, most of these contracts include payment to go to school if they flame out.

The biggest predictor of injury is past injuries, so chances are he gets hurt again. The Braves can afford $1M to take a chance on a kid. Most kids can't afford to pass up $1M to take a chance they improve their stock. That's always been the advantage teams hold over young players.

If he gets hurt next year, he probably still goes in the first ten rounds.

It's a risk, but the upside is he returns to form and is drafted in the top 15.

Upside of let's say 4 m vs. 1m in hand vs 200k as a floor?

You can only go to Stanford as a kid with your teammates and classmates once. Money isn't everything. I'd be cool with my kid making the call.

I agree with you on this. I love college baseball, but no way I turn down a big pay day to pay for school myself. If there were full scholarships, it'd be a little different

Credit to Ensheff. He was right on the huge overslot sign on Wright.

This is going to be a much shallower draft from last year. I like the strategy, but I hope everyone now sees the downside of going the BPA route.
