Official off-season trade rumor and suggestion thread

MLBTR: "The Rangers are on the verge of acquiring right-hander Yovani Gallardo from the Brewers, sources tell FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi. Earlier today, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation tweeted the Rangers could be adding a starting pitcher. Morosi tweets Jurickson Profar is not part of the package heading to Milwaukee.

Gallardo, who went to high school in Fort Worth, is a free agent at the end of the upcoming season and the Rangers are a good bet to re-sign him based on his Texas ties, Morosi tweets. The 28-year-old (29 in February) suffered through a mixed season a year ago with a career-low in victories (eight) and K/9 (6.8), but posting career-highs with a 3.51 ERA and 2.5 BB/9."

I feel like 50 is the most fair an balanced poster on the forum.

Thanks (I think--LOL). I try to strike a middle ground for the simple reason I'm old and have watched a lot of baseball and have seen things go in cycles (for both the Braves and the game as a whole). I have a ton of opinions and my baseball philosophy mirrors my life philosophy (which I grabbed from Heraclitus--the pre-Socratic Greek philosopher) of everything is pretty much always in flux. I respect those who follow the new metrics, but to me they leave a lot of important things unanswered (that probably can't be answered). I think the biggest thing the new stats movement has done is supply fans with more ammo to like or dislike a certain player because for most every player you can find some synopsis which supports a particular point of view in terms of merit or demerit.

I enjoy the debate. I don't follow the game as closely as I used to, so when I don't know something, I usually just save myself some typing.

This would make our rebuild look like an even better decision. No way we would have ever beaten the Nats for the next 2-3 years with last year's team.

According to Jon Heyman, Scherzer is asking for a 7-year deal. That's insane.

We should also note that Zimmerman and Fister are free agents after this year. And all the previous rumors about the Nats signing Scherzer included moving one of Zimmerman or Fister now.

True. It wouldn't surprise me if Desmond is moved before Opening Day, either.

And ...

Agreed. Heyman is reporting the same, though he is saying at least one other club is involved. We recently heard about mutual interest between the Cardinals and Scherzer so they could be that other finalist I suppose.

MLBTR adds to this rumor: "Agent Scott Boras has said it would be an ownership decision on whether a team will sign Scherzer and that it could be a “two-step process” – ink Scherzer and then trade another of their starters. Barry Svlurga of the Washington Post sees the Nationals employing this strategy (Twitter links)."

I have no problem with the Nats giving Scherzer a 7 year deal. Hope they do and are handcuffed with the contract in 2/3 years. It doesn't make them much better if they end up dealing Zimmerman.

@jonmorosi
Yes, #Nats are willing to trade Stephen Strasburg if they don't get acceptable offer for Zimmermann (in event they land Scherzer).

I would guess Tigers.

Illitch has deep pockets.

@Ken_Rosenthal
Growing confidence among #Nationals officials that they will land Scherzer. Officials from #Yankees, #RedSox, #Astros all deny involvement.

@jonmorosi
Jordan Zimmermann is most likely #Nats trade candidate if they sign Max Scherzer, sources reiterated to me during last hour.

I venture to bet we'll have scouts here . . .

@jcrasnick
Cuban CF Dayron Varona is expected to draw lots of scouts for a showcase Tuesday in Delray Beach, Fla.

@jcrasnick
Varona, 26, has a .312/.376/.470 slash line in 407 career games. He was an All-Star and Gold Glove winner in Cuba Serie Nacional.
