Official off-season trade rumor and suggestion thread

Bowman has a new article tonight about how Fredi might construct the lineup. It's mostly the usual stuff, but check out the last paragraph. Sounds like the Braves may be considering adding a LHH hitter. Maybe an upgrade over Almonte for the LF platoon slot with Gomes?

"As things stand, Gonzalez is toying with the idea of moving Freeman from third to the cleanup spot against right-handers. But the options might widen, as the Braves contend there is still a chance they could acquire another player to strengthen the lineup against righties."

I hope they mean Hector Olivera and that we are able to sign him soon. But the way it reads my guess is someone like David DeJesus since we know Tampa Bay wants to move him.

I could foresee a scenario where signing Olivera to be the everyday 2B and cleanup hitter would be Plan A, and Plan B would be a LH platoon bat like DeJesus for LF. The Braves have some money to spend and it feels like they have every intent of fielding the most competitive team possible for 2015 versus putting the cash in the vault.

I'm growing more skeptical this week that Braves will be able to sign Olivera. The Dodgers and Mariners have joined the fray and it sounds like he really impressed in the showcase a couple days ago. Our best chance would likely be if SD signs Shields and LA signs Moncada, as that would seemingly take them out of the running for Olivera.

According to MLBN he is expected to sign with the Dodgers. But that might be just a guess with them having interest and the money to outbid the Braves, Giants, etc. I hope they're wrong and that we get him but I am doubting that we get it done. Further, I don't like the idea of paying 5 million plus whatever is required in a trade on a declining DeJesus.

I'd trade for tony Kemp of the Astros and pencil him in as lead off/2b next season

Short maybe 5'8'' but he walks more than he k's and has more pop than La Stella has.

Why do we want to trade for another second baseman when we should be set there with Peraza and Jace Peterson? Kemp is 23 and hasn't played a full season in AA yet. Plus Kemp is still learning second base while Peraza is already seen as a potential gold glove second baseman (and very good defensively). What we need is a replacement for CJ at third, at least against righties at third. Hector Olivera fits that need best as he can be signed soon and is already ready for the Majors. Further, Ruiz who we got in the Houston trade might not be ready till late 2017 or so. So if Ruiz works out, then we could just move Olivera to the outfield (or trade him) when Ruiz is ready should we sign him.

Padres are all in, apparently. It will be interesting to see how they do. They were a 77 win team last year with almost no hitting.

Padres go from an unwatchable team to a contender... Braves pretty much did the opposite, even though I'm a fan of the rebuild.

I just think some of the moves (like Markakis) don't gel so was a bit confuzzled

@JeffPassan: The Padres are taking over the world: Sources say San Diego is working out Yoan Moncada today and plans to be aggressive in bidding for him.

Unreal. Their ownership is not messing around. The world is pretty much Moncada's oyster . . . a lot of seriously interested teams that figure to make good offers. Given that, it would seem foolish for him to choose the worst hitting environment in MLB unless SD outbids everyone by a fair margin.

Holy. Yeah, I think they're good enough to contend and a playoff spot is not out of the picture at all, but that team with an opportunity for Moncada. That's a WS contender.

I don't know... Most think Moncada still needs a year or two in the minors

Moncada certainly will start out in the minors. Olivera is the one that will start out in the Majors. The Padres are said to be interested in both.

I know but I was responding to the comment that Moncada would make them a WS contender just two posts up in the same thread....

Would you rather have Shane Victorino or David DeJesus, assuming contracts are about the same? (assume DeJesus is 6 million including the buyout and Victorino is around the same after Boston takes on half to move him)
