Official official offseason thread

Reynolds is very interesting. Will of course, depend on what the potential package. Not sure if the Braves have what the Pirates would seek, but it’s definitely worth kicking the tires on.

I think it's a tough match-up. Pirates need offense but have young players at 3B, SS, and 2B (and a couple more on the way) so Grissom probably isn't someone they'd have a deep interest in acquiring. They have 2021 #1 overall draft pick Henry Davis at C, but he's a year away. They need pitching, but I don't know if guy like Muller, Elder, Schuster, et. al., fit the profile of what they are looking for.

I thought the Pirates would be better this year. Sometimes W/Ls can be misleading if the team is building something, but the Pirates were just flat-out bad. They have a promising pipeline of younger guys, so they're not looking for some finishing touches for a team clearly on the rise. This is where our lack of minor league depth really hurts us.

Realistically the price for Reynolds probably starts with Contreras and Anderson. If the plan is to stick with Rosario/Ozuna at DH no matter what due to the cash they are owed, then converting Contreras into another star OFer is a reasonable play to make.

An OF of Reynolds/Harris/Acuna could produce something like 15 WAR if all play to the higher end of projections with 10 as the reasonable floor. That would be truly remarkable production from an OF.

This is a deal we likely do not have the juice to make.

This is the main reason I did not like the Olson deal. Olson is a first baseman. Just pay for a bat.

I’d rather have those Olson assets to get renyolds and have a guy at 1b.

I wonder if there is a way to get super creative. If we lose dansby we get two picks. Could we do two ptbnl and let them pick those guys?

No. We will have to hope he stays out of the division

If the Braves are going to trade guys like Grissom and Anderson, a guy like Reynolds is who they should be targeting.

I’d be against trading Contreras for almost anyone. I think the TDA/Pina/Contreras trio will be very valuable covering most of the C/DH PAs in 2023.

Say or again! I'm in this boat.

The only piece that stung in that trade was Langeliers. But even then, the Pirates just drafted a catcher #1.

Contreras coming off the season he had last season would have a ton more value to any team than Langliers would have. Will give you a bigger return as well if thats what you are trying to do.

I understood the Olson trade. I hate it. But I understand it. I wish we kept Freeman as well.

Pirates will probably be similar to what the A's have done for strategy, looking for young major league level players that: (1) fill an existing hole, and (2) will be under their control if/when their pipeline hits the bigs. Actually, with three more years of control, Reynolds fits that description, so I can see why the Pirates will command a hefty package to move him.

Mets I could see in on Reynolds given the Nimmo situation. Contreras and Grissom have a lot of control left so that would fit the needs for the Pirates. If they went strictly off of need they’d get lesser players. Always get the best players available to you even if you flip those later for what you need. In a full season Contreras could probably give you offensively what Reynolds does.

Somebody will regret that contract big time. That dude won’t age well at all.

If you can win a WS in the first 4-5 years, it's worth it. But yeah, that backend wont be good whatsoever.

Cubs will probably have to overpay since they aren’t winning anything right now. With the Phillies having so much money tied up I figured Swanson would be their main SS target and I hope he is. I’d rather see them sign Swanson than the other 3.

It’s not that the guys were too goood to trade. It’s that you can only trade them once.

I get it. But at the time AA felt that was the best option.

But Pache, Estes, and Cusick didn't have much value overall. Langeliers had the most value at the time but didn't have a great season. So had we kept him, who knows what happens. If he has a down season with us, would he have the value we needed to grab another piece.....it's debatable. At some point you have to move the prospects.

If AA can turn Pache, Langeliers, Estes, Cusick, Contreras, Anderson, Grissom into Matt Olson and Bryan Reynolds its a steep price, but also gives us arguably the best offense in all of baseball for the next 3+ seasons. Especially if they signed Swanson back, the team would be stacked.

Some things to keep in mind: Reynolds playing primarily left field as a rookie in 2019; he has said before he’d like to play for Atlanta; Pirates would certainly like to add a couple of starting-pitcher prospects, the only prospect area in which ATL has anything close to surplus.

Not sure we're a match for them but if it costs starting pitching and one of Grissom/Contreras, i think you do it.
