Official official offseason thread

I think one of the things that has really hurt us as far as the SS situation goes is the fizzling of Braden Shewmake. I think when he was drafted the Braves had an eye on him being the heir to Dansby. The guy was the 21st pick of the draft and you generally don't spend that pick on a reserve. With Shewmake not even looking like a future backup (he's 25 and has struggled since low A) our options have dwindled.

Honestly, having Grissom working out with Washington smells of desperation. Grissom wasn't a great defensive second baseman, he could be downright painful at SS. I think it shows they understand that Arcia isn't a player that should be starting on a contender.

Our outlook at SS is pretty grim.

Agree. Add to that the Braves lost the international prospects and one they lost--Livan Soto--may be the Angels' starting SS next season.

In baseball, a team shouldn't have to draft for need, but I think a strong case can be made that Shewmake was drafted with the scenario you've described in mind.

The level of the sanctions the Braves were hit with still pisses me off. It was a complete overreaction by MLB. They should have come down hard on Coppy but left the Braves largely alone as an organization. GM's seeing one of their own getting slammed would have been just as effective of a message. But MLB had a chance to make an example of a team that wasn't one of their sacred cows and they took it. If it was the Yankees or Red Sox that got caught you'd have seen a scout or two get banned and that would have been the end of it.
 
Lots of billionaires in this world but how many would be interested in ownership if the prices for a franchise keeps skyrocketing. Seems to me MLB and MLBPA are both somewhat concerned with baseball becoming a corporate ownership thing.

The Braves should bring in msstate7 and myself as consultants any time they are considering drafting a player from the SEC. I'm pretty sure either of us could have told them that Shewmake wasn't going to pan out just from watching him in college.

Can't speak for him, but I know I'd make myself available for this position for the low low price of three seats in the Chairman's Club for one weekend series per year.

It can be frustrating being a Braves fan at the Winter Meetings because since AA has come on board, we NEVER, make any move here, while all of the teams around us get better.

However, AA has shown consistently that he is right more often than wrong. So in AA I trust, and if he stands pat as is going into spring training, I may need to report to a different kind of AA.
