Official official offseason thread

I’m just confused about why. We started the day with SS and LF holes. Now we give up Contreras, Muller and Tarnok for a slight upgrade at catcher and still have the same holes? What’s the point?

Very good point. Looking at the announced deal, I see we threw in Royber Salinas as well. He's a ways away, but it looks like we gave up the guy I thought was our #1 trade chip (Contreras) and further depleted our minor league depth for a starter (a good starter) at a position where we were fairly well set up. And, as you say, at the end of all the shuffling, we still have holes in LF and SS. Given we've traded Muller, Tarnok, and Salinas, I don't see how we can dip deeper into our minor league system to land help at either of those positions.

The other angle on this is that while Contreras had issues defensively, he had additional value in that he could DH when not catching. I don't see either Murphy or d'Arnaud being someone you'd put in the DH role.

Brewers made out like bandits and really improved a major weakness they’ve had for years now and upgraded the offense for practically nothing lol

Can someone explain why we didn’t just trade straight up with the A’s? Looks like we wouldn’t have had to give up WC..?

we gave up all of our best trade chips for a part time player.. I absolutely hate this deal.. we now don't have a 3rd catcher either.. TDA will go down at some point. So we essentially opened another hole on our team.

And this is the point EVEN while acknowledging the talents of Murphy.

Despite the "sources" I still don't feel like the deal is complete. Seems extremely odd for the Brewers to wind up with Contreras and the A's to wind up with Pina. What role did the Brewers really have in this deal? They have up 2 replacement players for Contreras, Yeager, and Payamps? Something seems off.

Way off. Waiting on the other shoe to drop anytime. Even if it's a precursor to a free agent signing, that's a lot to give up unless you were getting Milwaukee or Oakland to take on some of Ozuna's money.

I don’t get this trade at all. We still have 2 glaring needs at SS and LF. If anything this cost is our best DH. Unless we needed that little money saved to sign Correa, doubt it, it makes very little sense.

Reading game threads will be unbearable now. Already got those who are going to whine every time Murphy does something wrong and will have to hear why this trade didn’t make sense.

Olson, now Murphy.

I will not be reading any game threads lol

If we go to the regular season with Ian Anderson and Soroka for fifth starter we are going to have a long year. Plus Morton is not getting any younger.

They used to be hilarious.

I don't think it's a lot. Contreras is a really nice bat, but we got the equal bat back while getting better at defense and framing. Muller, I really won't miss him. Is the other milb pitcher a game changer? Maybe, but I doubt it

I'll private message you what I felt they did wrong that night

I think the savings would only make sense for Swanson signing at his reported counter-offer rate or the halfway mark between what we supposedly offered and he supposedly countered. OR a LF on a similar $20M contract. Still doesn't make sense for the entirety of the trade, though.
