Official official offseason thread

I'm glad that AA didn't overspend on Swanson. I feel that if he were to do that, it should have been with Freeman last offseason, or Turner/Correa this offseason.

I am concerned with the drop off in production we will understandably have at SS. AA surely has something up his sleeve, but i'm just not seeing it.

We have a slight upgrade at catcher which was a strength last season. But we are heavily down graded at SS. And LF has been a black hole for the past season plus.

Always appreciate what Swanson did but this is the right move. Just not a fan of dishing out almost $200mm bucks to a hitter of his capability.

Lets not forget, even when we won the WS, Swanson obviously had the bombs in Game 4 and 6 that are forever in our good graces, but makes you forget for the entire postseason he had a 224 average, 262 OBP, 345 slugging, and 607 OPS. Obviously this year 2-16 with 7 k's. Point is not to justify a players worth on a small sample size, but none the less, just a reminder of the types of awful streaks he is capable of. We are not but one year removed from a 248 average and 2 WAR.

Was never going to judge the offseason on shortstop given how bonkers the market has been. My only disappointment is that we haven't managed to fill any of shortstop, DH, or left field and it just makes the Murphy trade that much more baffling to me. How do you use all of your trade capital at a position you are elite? and in doing so make yourself worse at DH? Was neutral to negative on the trade when we made it, but losing Dansby just elevates it to that much more questionable.

Good for Big Dick Dansby! I’ll miss him but I’m happy to pass on that

100% my sentiments. Always been a big fan of Bae, but giving him the highest AAV on the team, especially for seven years, is just not something that seemed at all sensible. As an added bonus, I'm glad he didn't go to a team I hate—seeing him joining Freeman in LA would've been particularly annoying.

With this move, it seems likely Grisson + Arcía is the move at SS. I'd like the see the Braves allocated any remaining resources to LF(/DH). Conforto seems like one of the more reasonably high-upside plays left out there, with the potential for solid QPR if he'd sign for a short-term, prove-it, Anthopoulos-special style deal.

Good times..they said we were overreacting...now people are talking about SS and LF which we said should have been priority one...lol. But I'm sure AA will pull a rabbit out of the hat. Right?

Overreacting or not… there’s still zero universe where the Braves should have paid more than the winner in any of those deals.

Yeah hard pass. But there’s no excuse for AA not to upgrade LF now and I don’t mean bringing back Duvall/Grossman. It would almost have to be through free agency now because Grissom would probably have to be in any deal for Reynolds or Happ.

I can’t fault AA for not paying these prices but man we need an upgrade at SS and LF somehow. Crazy that Turner seems like “the good deal”

The team was very likely to downgrade from 2022 at SS whether they signed Swanson or not, since a 6+ fwar campaign was very unlikely. Even the trio above Swanson is no guarantee to hit that high-water mark from Swanson (though they're much more likely to hit it than he is).

The hope is that Grissom + Arcía can contribute 2-3 fwar, that Albies can return to being a 3-4 fwar player, and that Acuña can return to 5+ fwar levels; add in the upgrade at C, and you see the outlines of a plan to be better in 2023 than 2022. I do agree, though, that something needs to be done about LF, with Conforto representing the most obvious angle at this point, and Brantley still being an option (even if his ability to play LF is pretty suss).

I for one am happy we don’t have a knee jerk GM that doesn’t panic and overspend. That’s why we stay successful. Off season winners rarely win anything of consequence

With the money the Braves have not been spending and the big money free agents off the board, I’m hoping for a Max Fried extension

You’re gonna be hoping and then disappointed for a while if you’re expecting AA to extend a starter near 30… especially if he wants to be elsewhere which may or may not be the case

It is the second-biggest free agent deal in Cubs history, second only to Jason Heyward’s eight-year, $184MM pact from the 2015-16 offseason.

Hmm
