Official official offseason thread

Yes, we can all read the “they were in on the bidding” articles if it makes folks feel better, but the end result is what it is.

When every single player signs for a contract that’s “too expensive” that means the value of FAs has increased. Every single contract can’t be “too expensive”…by definition.

Some years are outliers.

But even if this is what market free agency looks like it might just mean it's unwise to engage with it.

Very old now, very obvious statement.

The “we are out of money “ refrain sounds very familiar from last year at this time… just before signing Jansen. I suspect AA is willing to spend if it brings good value, but will not get into bidding wars that push the value beyond reason.

Thankfully, he spends money on good young players and stays away from big, longer term contracts (mostly).

Tough to watch now, but a better long term approach. I will watch as these contracts come back to bite teams before very long.

People say literally the same things every year. The truth is AA really doesn't want to give long term market rate deals to feee agents.

Boy I remember when everyone said Copy wasn’t stupid. Then he started doing stupid stuff. I like AA. But I am not going to just assume he is god because he did something good in the past.

I haven’t been a fan of a lot of his moves since the WS win.

Did you like the ones before the WS?

AA's hardly perfect, no GM is. But he's made more good moves than bad. I doubt his only offseason moves are Jimenez and Murphy. More moves are coming. AA has a plan, and it's worked short and long-term. Making moves just to make moves is what gets GM's fired, and closes windows faster than they should close.

Agreed. Still 2-3 spots left on the 40-man. At least nine names have been rattled off the last few pages who would likely upgrade the current roster on paper in some way (Conforto, Brantley, Drury, Myers, Profar, Pollock, Duvall, Grossman, Taylor) and wouldn't cost any significant prospects or a ton of money.

I'd roll with Arcia/Grissom for SS. LF/DH/OF is where we need to focus, there's not enough in FA/trade to do anything for SS until the deadline. There's plenty left on the FA market as pointed above to add assuming we're not broke lol.

AA was on XM radio today, said the Braves focus now will be Grissom/Arcia competing at SS and that it worked with Riley/Donaldson but doesn’t work every time. Decided to do the Murphy trade now because he didn’t feel he could get him next season. Will have Soroka/Anderson competing for the 5th spot along with others that have options. Bullpen is set. Focus would be in the OF if he does anything.

To be clear, it is nearly impossible to navigate a contention window so it never closes. It’s not like AA failed as a GM if the Braves have to start a rebuild 5 years from now. What he has done so far is extend the window a couple years with all the extensions, but it will still close in the same manner. The true test will be how he pivots from contender through the inevitable rebuild back into contention.

When I say AA doesn’t have money to spend, I mean he doesn’t have top end FA money. I do still expect an upgrade in the OF, and I’ve expected Conforto to be that guy ever since he was hanging around late last offseason. He fits perfectly in the low risk contract category AA loves.

I’ve always assumed Arcia was going to be Plan B at SS just based on the way they seemed to target him when he wasn’t really needed. Plan A was to sign a good value at SS, and since that obviously didn’t happen it’s time for B.

Makes sense. But Riley wasn’t Riley year 1.

Need another impact bat.

Agree.

The shot is to keep developing impact guys and keeping making money to maintain payroll.

Harris and strider are crazy. Impact guys, not picked at the top of the draft and only a couple of years in the minors.

That is very hard to do. But they did just do it, twice.

Michael Brantley resign with Houston Astros.

Brantley seems to like playing in Houston.

The best LH bat on the market is now Conforto. He probably just became too expensive.

My wish list for the balance to the off-season.
1. Sign Conforto to a short term prove it deal
2. Cut Ozuna or trade in a bad contract swap
3. Offer Rosario to the Marlins for Soler. Soler is owed 15 mil this year. The Fish could save 6 million and avoid a possible 9 mil player option in 24.
4. One way to improve the team would be to have a true corner infielder available on the bench to rest Riley and Olson. Resting Riley and Olson would most likely result in better production. Profar or Drury would be my first choice. Mancini or Will Myers could be good options to back up first.
5. Sign Andrus for infield depth. Maybe he could fake it at 3rd as a backup to Riley.

IÂ’m hoping to see AA make the bench deeper this year so Snit can rest players.
