Official official offseason thread

Profar and Drury would have been nice acquisitions because they can play multiple positions, they can be better and more consistent than Luplow and Diaz, and they can create more opportunities for off days for guys like Olson. I know Snit would still be a factor in that, but give him more viable options, and who knows.

I personally still like the prospect of Jean Segura on a short term deal. Decent defender that will hit for good average and steal a handful of bases. 3.4 fWAR in 2021 and 1.7 fWAR in 2022 in only 387 appearances. Profar would also fit nicely.

Ok…

I wouldn’t have wanted to give those SSs a decade or more either, but we can’t say every single contract is “too many years”. The contracts aren’t “too many years” if every single one was “too many years”.

Just like you wouldn’t walk into a Ferrari dealership with $20k and complain about things being “too expensive”, you don’t walk into the 2022/2023 FA market complaining about “too expensive” or “too many years”. AA simply can’t afford to shop in this market, and that’s on him for misunderstanding the market conditions, or spending money elsewhere (like Rosario and Ozuna).

So now we get to watch Rosario, Ozuna and someone named Luplow take 1000+ PAs while chasing a title. That’s on AA, and nobody else is at fault.

I'm just still not convinced that Rosario/Ozuna/Luplow will be fixtures in the OF/DH at this stage of the off season. They very well may be... but I'm not willing to bet on that with half an off season and ST left to go. Players like Segura and Profar can still be difference makers.

I’m 50/50 right now as to whether Ozuna will be on the roster, but we also have to consider that if we don’t upgrade from his spot, we either have to go with a third catcher on the bench or we are playing more games without the best DH option (either TDA or Murphy, depending on who’s not catching that day) being in the lineup.

I also personally wouldn't mind kicking the tires on a 1-year deal for Kluber (especially if we can make a trade from pitching depth)... was quietly pretty good with Tampa last year and was the healthiest he's been in a while.

Profar is projected for 1.4 wins, and would be a very light hitting OF. Segura has played a grand total of like 17 innings at SS the last 3 years, and some team will sign him to play 2B.

I’m struggling to see how those guys make a difference on this roster, or how they will represent any type of “value”.

Profar can play a lot of positions... can provide pretty good production for a super sub. Can play all 3 OF positions, SS, 2B, and 1B in a pinch. Last year posted a .320 wOBA up against a .315 xwOBA, a 110 wRC+ and 2.5 fWAR. Very good BB/K rates. Yes it was his best year but nothing looked super lucky. Maybe not a "difference maker" but someone who could really help the team. I forgot that Segura has moved mainly to 2B for the past several years. I don't know if he can play a decent SS or not still... I'm guessing probably not.

If you think Snit is going to use a utility guy in that manner you haven’t been paying attention the last 5 years. And yes, he could fit the roster in that manner…but “super sub” is not the problem with this roster. The problem with this roster is the gaping holes at LF and DH taken up by guys projected to be replacement level and being paid a combined $27M+.

And we talk about “value”.

Listen dude... I get it... I just think saying we are done in December is a bit ridiculous. Also anything to take plate appearances away from Ozuna/Rosario helps the problems on the roster.

Still wish we’d made the Brewers take on Rosario, even if we still had to pay half.

That was the frustrating part to me in the Murphy trade. The Brewers somehow got Contreras for free, and it seems like they could have been forced to kick in a bit more. Maybe not taking on Rosario per se, but something more than a 40.

The Murphy trade without someone else coming back from the Brewers still miffs me. I thought for sure we had Adames coming back.

I’m still not sure why folks thought the Brewers would trade away their cheap 5 win SS in the middle of their contention window. Never understood the logic behind those trade fantasies.

Ignoring what the brewers gave up. We did well in the Murphy trade in what we lost. What we gave up was no way good enough to land Murphy and adames. Brewers can barely pay for the team as is. They aren't taking on dead money like Rosario just because.

I would have liked that as well, but I still think that something like that is largely inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.
