Official official offseason thread

Torres can hit but his defensive limitations probably limit him to playing SS especially with the shift being banned.

A little strange. Granted 7.3 million over 3 years isn't super significant, but guaranteeing money to a player who might be relegated to the bench by June just seems a bit off.

Hopefully Arcia will put those fears to rest and perform like an average starting SS.

Not even gonna trip. This will look genius.....or absurd. I think it's ok though. I like Arcia enough, but I still think Grissom will be good. Even in a utility role should he be relegated to it.

Yeah this deal has no downside to it. Arcia can play multiple positions and seems like a good dude. Even if he is a sub it’s still not bad.

AA loves arcia.

Makes me feel great about it.

AA also loved Ozuna.

But this isn't that bad of a deal as it's not a ton of money, even if there's a very good chance it's still an overpay. I think the odds are better than people think that Arcia is replacement level over the next 3 years and you should be getting that kind of production for league minimum, not $2 million.

I am a little puzzled with the logic of locking him up though. Arcia is in no way, shape, or form anything resembling a starting SS. If he starts all year he will likely be the worst SS in the majors by a fair bit. He should never be more than a reserve. We have Shewmake who appears to be a significantly better fielder than Arcia and as such would probably bring at least the same value as a reserve. Shewmake would also be had for the league minimum.

But if AA seems to have a soft spot it's for fundamentally unsound hitters that can show some pop but who are miserable defenders.

Arcia's defense has been pretty good in ST. Money wise, that's not bad at all. Interesting move though for sure.

I mean I do agree he isn't a starting caliber SS imo.. maybe he will surprise us. But for 2 million, he only needs to produce less than half a WAR to make his contract worth it and he should be able to do that easily as a sub if deployed properly, plus he can back up 2/3/SS... So not too worried about this contract. Hopefully the Ehire experiment will end soon and we can call up Shew or Grissom if either is playing well in the Minors.

The fact that it's not much money makes it not really a problem, it's more that it just doesn't make sense to me. Arcia's value would be easily replaced by someone making league minimum. Shewmake would probably give you similar value as a reserve.

Our problem is a lack of a starting SS. If Grissom can't cut it there defensively then we really don't have any internal options. Shewmake is not a good bet to be able to hit and Arcia should never be considered as a starter. We have multiple reserve options but no real good bets of anyone who can really hold down the position.
