Official Offseason Thread

Combining the Astros pitchers ages and departure of Cole, looking at some position guys getting a few years older and nearer FA, and don't forget the pending punishment coming up, is there any thoughts out there that they make a possible trade partner?

Sun Trust Park signs came down today. What is going to replace them if anything??

It hasn't been officially announced, but after the merger with BB&T was completed, it's now known as Truist. So maybe Truist park? They still own the naming rights for awhile.

Good. Hopefully they move on and it’s just us and Washington. Maybe this will speed up his decision so we can all get on with our offseason.

The Twins have always been cheap so I didn’t see them really paying up for him. We know that Washington is gonna try to defer money in the contract and I don’t see JD doing that. He’s just waiting on AA to up the money a little bit.

At some point someone is going to have to blink. It’s about to be a two team race and you have to wonder as the teams start to disappear, will his offer? Likely not, but he waiting for an increased offer will be less likely.

The Nats aren’t raising their bid and the Twins definitely aren’t. So it’s up to AA imo. The Nats have made backup moves just in case and it looks like the Twins are heading that way.

If this is the case it’s hard to see AA not making the move here. The Gnats aren’t in a position to go get Bryant. We’d be strengthening our team and insuring they can’t strengthen theirs.

An thought occurs. Would it make sense to sign Donaldson and trade for Bryant? Bryant could play any of the corner positions and give Freeman Donaldson and Acuna the occasional day off. Then you just plug Neck in LF for the day and the lineup keeps chugging.

ha. You’re assuming Snit would even know how to manage scheduling like that.

Not sure why folks still mention the possibility of adding Donaldson PLUS another one of the big-money acquisitions. While it's fun to dream about, it just doesn't seem realistic.

Payroll is already at an all-time high, and while The Battery doesn't show any signs of slowing down anytime in the near future they're not going to spend every dime of that on payroll. The idea behind the initial investment in the park and surrounding area was that investors (corporate ownership) would eventually be able to put increasing amounts of the profits into their own pockets as the debt gets paid down.

Trading for Bryant really doesn't make any sense anyway - unless Donaldson doesn't return. Why on earth would you give up the pieces that would be necessary to get him and then play him out of position - especially when Waters and Pache will be ready before the end of 2020? If AA was in a position to blow that far past previous payroll budgets, the play would've been to bring Donaldson back and make a play for Strasburg instead of (or in addition to) Hamels.

While I agree that I see no way we sign JD and then trade for KB. I don’t agree with you on the point that it doesn’t make sense because he is out of position. Initially I thought that too but KB bat plays in left just fine. Getting him and playing him there would improve the team significantly. Also the payroll is a complete unknown. We can’t speculate what it will be or what the ceiling is because we are so far above what we have ever spent that you can’t use any modeling to accurately predict the number.

I know Braves used to start off season practice the day after News Year. Anyone heard if that is still part of program and if so any word on Riley and more importantly maybe, Camargos condition?

It does, sure. But does it really make sense to give up the types of assets it's going to take to get him for one or two years with a seemingly legitimate answer like Waters so close to ready? Even if that money is actually there (not questioning the fact that it seems all but impossible to guess after this winter), wouldn't you rather have the $45-ish million and the prospects to spend on a TOR arm?

Would we love to do that? Of course... Bryant would be a great get as a LF or 3B, but it's doubtful and it would add to our already high cap.

That said, and because I love constructing dream lineups, this would be so good: Acuna RF-Bryant LF-Freeman 1B-Donaldson 3B-Albies 2B-Swanson SS-TD/Flowers C-Ender CF (though he may be traded for cap relief and we move Acuna to CF).

Any OF adds would likely be after Donaldson and could come in the form of Puig or Souza.
