Official Offseason Thread

I’d bet on the Braves acquiring a RHH OFer.

In fact, I think it’s more likely they get someone like Castro and Avisail Garcia than winning the bidding war on Grandal.

Grandal for 2/44, Hamels for 1/? and Mous for 2/20 and i feel great. is the payroll there for that?

We're at 87 according to spotrac after arb projections. If the ? is 13-15, then yeah Braves can do that but probably wouldnt have much left over to do a whole lot else. But Hamels, Moose, and Grandal while keeping a pick for JD if he signed elsewhere, and keeping our prospects would be a win for AA this winter.

I'm not sure on the outfielder, more i look at it, i can see AA use some of our money on a SP than the bulk of it on the offense.

Grandal, Moose, and Hamels would be a pretty good offseason. He still has enough ammo to make a trade for say Haniger if he wanted to on top of all of those moves.

Does it make sense to sign Hamels at 12-15 million rather than someone at the 4-8m price point?

Not sure there will be someone available that's very reliable in that range. If not, maybe AA should've kept Julio. If Hamels can be had on a one-year deal in the $13-$15 million range or you circle back to Julio on an $8-$10 million deal, the Hamels upgrade would be a slam-dunk for me.

Hamels has shown for the Cubs he still has something left. So I’d take him over Teheran any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Plus the intangible part. I think he would be great giving Max some tips

That doesn't necessarily feel like a better team to me.

Moose really is not anything particularly special and I'd not be thrilled with tying up so much into Grandal, an older catcher, anchoring the lineup in the second half.

I think you'd need a third piece for the of.

Hamels has name recognition but not sure he's worth the premium at this point and I assume there will be a premium.

Looking over FGs projected salaries table, a potentially interesting way to widely spread the money we assume he has available if AA's truly not interested in Grandal...

Hamels - 1 year/$15 million AAV
Moose - 2 years/$12 million AAV
Avila - 1 year/$4 million AAV
Drew Pomeranz - 2 years/$6 million AAV
Chris Martin - 2 years/$4.5 million AAV
Ben Zobrist - 1 year/$5 million AAV

$46.5 million in additional salary

That'd fill out the rotation, replace a chunk of Donaldson's production, add a decent platoon-partner for Flowers, create a potentially dominant pen, and add another usable player for the expanded roster. Garcia's likely to get a multi-year deal, so he's probably not a real option since he'd more or less be in the way next year - if AA can't find a taker for Ender next winter, he could always play Pache in LF in 2021 and have the best defensive OF in the game. Melancon/Pomeranz/Greene/Newk/Martin/Minter or Dayton/Jackson/Sobotka could turn into a shutdown pen. Zobrist would provide another super-utility guy (and switch-hitter) for the additional roster spot.

Contreras being rumored available is interesting. What does he have, 70-80 in surplus value?

Interesting indeed. The Cubs seem to like what they saw from ex-Brave Caratini. If they are right it makes sense to move Contreras. Contreras is a 2.5 WAR player. As a rough rule surplus value during the three arb years is about half of production. So call it 4 WAR of surplus value. Or about 35M.

I'm trying to think of creative ways to deal with the Melancon situation. I think it would be ideal to pawn off his contract on someone else, but is there any way that we could do that while also adding a helpful offensive piece? Maybe attach a prospect or something to a team in need of bullpen help in order to get a right handed outfielder? I don't really think Melancon has much, if any, tangible value on his own. But if we could figure out a way to do a contract swap for a better player by attaching a prospect to him then I would be all for it.

If Contreras is available then he becomes my #1 target. He’s not a FA until 2023 and his brother could potentially back him up one day. He’d be around 2 million in salary so you could still sign JD and probably Hamels. If AA could pull that off then the offseason would be a huge success.

Based on the Cubs needs I wonder if an Ender/Anderson package would be a good start
