Boras getting this deal for Moose takes JD out of the picture for Braves IMO. Almost a sure thing his starting point will be 4 years and above $25M per

With Mous gone, and the OF filled with Markakis, Duvall and Ender, the Braves pretty much need JD...or Rendon...or some sort of trade miracle pulled out of AA's hat if they want an offense that resembles the 2019 unit.

So unless the Braves are going to have a $150M opening day payroll, it's either JD or a Christmas miracle.

I still think the pick plays a role with JD and his age but there's alot of dumb teams out there that dont care and have money to blow.

If it aint JD, i'm not sure what AA will do, because...

TDA/Flo, FF, Ozzie, Dansby, Riley/Camargo, Acuna, Ender, Nick/Duvall, aint gonna cut it even with a great pen.

For reference, the top SP trade candidates along with their 2020 salary (projected for some):

Boyd - $6.4M
Ray - $10.8M
Archer - $9M
Bundy - $5.7M
Kluber - $17.5M
Smith - $0.6M

While I don't expect Kluber to be traded, and Smith isn't really very good, I could definitely see AA adding anyone from the Boyd/Ray/Archer/Bundy group if AA can find a package of spare parts another team likes. All would be upgrades over Teheran, and cheaper as well.

This. As of now the offense is a big step back. Even with JD he may not duplicate last years numbers being a year older. AA has a few cards up his sleeve I’m sure. The guys on MLB network this morning said JD would be a stretch at 3 years and his age with the pick attached. I still think 3/75 gets it done for whatever team.

How realistic do you think a trade for Trey Mancini to play 3rd is. That's the kind of trade that's hasnt been talked about much and gives us the production we need. He isnt going to be helping the O's win anytime soon, so they could flip him for young SPs and Riley from us.

Knowing how Boras plays you against me, why did none of the teams needing a 3d not jump on Moose. If Cincy can afford him you know any of the other 6 or 7 teams needing 3d base could meet that deal.

Him and Bundy would fill 2 needs.

How is Moose's defense at 2b? Could be a sneaky good move for them if he can be average or better there defensively whilst hitting like an above average 3b.

Asdrubal Cabrera to platoon with Riley at 3B, Joyce re-signed to replace Culberson, and the rest of the available money spent on a SP?

Not really any 3B options available without breaking the bank - especially if Texas and Washington plan to spend big on Rendon/Donaldson.

If the Moose signing means Donaldson definitely gets that 4th year now, Ozuna looks like more of an option all of a sudden. Non-tender Duvall before 8 PM to have some money to pay him.

If AA gets Asdrubal to platoon at 3b and we have Duvall platooning with Neck then AA needs to fired on the spot bc he completely blew the offseason. Our offense would be terrible.

That's the reason I brought up Ozuna again - if you replace Duvall with Ozuna and Flowers, Camargo, Markakis, Joyce, and Riley are your bench, you've certainly upgraded from a Markakis/Duvall platoon with a Flowers, Camargo, Culberson, Riley bench.

There's always Todd Frazier.

The bench needs a lh. I’d rather have Joyce for 2 million than Culberson. I think Ozzie could play ss and comargo 2b. They could risk it and stash a glove only ss in aaa. Tough with dansby injuries history.

What about Brian Anderson from the marlins? He has a ton of control but the marlins are dumb and they might like the poo poo platter of Wilson type guys.

Riley in all likelihood will not be on the opening day roster. And with Moose off the table, any notion of a Riley platoon at 3b is not really a realistic scenario. AA has hinted that Riley may start the year in AAA. He was left off the playoff roster for a reason.

I expect AA will try to sign JD/Rendon as plan A. If he fails to sign either, I would expect a trade of some sort, and not some bench player like Cabrera.

Rendon seems like a pipe dream, but posi-Braves can hang their hopes on, "Some friends of Rendon believe that he’s more interested in a shorter-term deal — perhaps a higher salary for a four- or five-year contract — because he might not be devoted to the idea of playing for as long as he possibly can."

MLBTR predicts Rendon to sign for 7/235 (33.5 AAV), and FG has him at 7/211 (30.1 AAV).

A higher AAV 4-5 year deal is probably something like 4/150 (37.5 AAV), or 5/175 (35 AAV).

With the current opening day payroll sitting at ~$108M, such a contract for Rendon puts the Braves at $140M-$145M with a few holes left to fill on the bench and in the rotation. Even the most optimistic fans and their visions of a $150M opening day payroll would have a hard time getting those numbers to work.

It looks like 3B is either a huge downgrade from 2019, big money for a declining JD, or a rabbit out of AA's hat, but Rendon would be huge...and perfect.

I think you are right....Cincy being idiots have really screwed us in the process.

Silver lining is that he did not sign to play 3rd, so should not be considered a 3rd baseman contract. It’s still stupid money for him.

What would a deal built around Riley for someone like Matt Chapman look like?

Would AA be willing to give up legitimate talent AND take Seager back if it meant getting Haniger?

It doesn't necessarily fit the value charts, but the Mariners would potentially be the type of team that would overvalue Riley. If you considered Waters/Haniger roughly a wash and Seattle kicked in some cash to make Seager's remaining commitment palatable ($8 million per maybe?) and they'd take Duvall's money back too, wouldn't adding Haniger and Seager somewhat "fix" things short-term? They're projected to make $22 million combined in 2020. If the Ms ate $8 million of that and took Duvall back, that ought to leave AA with enough money to add a SP and someone like Joyce as another bench piece. Try to unload Ender next winter when Pache is completely ready to take over to pay for some of what Haniger might get.

Rays dropped Heredia, a less than awesome candidate to be a cheap 5th OFer.

DBacks also dropped Taijuan Walker, a guy coming off TJ that could be a comeback pitcher at the back of the rotation.

While there's no need to "take Duvall's money back" since he can just be dumped at little/no cost, Seager is a decent option at 3B. He's essentially Mous at more money than projected.

Haniger is all about how much the Ms overvalue him, and selling low on him now would be moronic...so I hope they do it.
