Official Offseason Thread

Heyman- Executives are expecting Donaldson decision soon. Feels like mostly an NL East battle. Belief is Nats are in big — likely at 4 years — but JD is expected to give Braves a last chance. Twins, Rangers, Dodgers have been linked but seem like longer shots (LA already has a great 3B)

Heyman with more worthless guesses.

You know Ozuna got a QO too, right, or would we only lose a 4th rounder for him in hypothetical scenario. And JD takes pretty good care of his body, i dont foresee him being a DH down the line but it's still risky giving a 34 year old, 4 years.

We would lose the 4th rounder for signing Ozuna while recovering the 3rd rounder for Donaldson signing with the Gnats.

Washington is fixin to overpay for JD I can feel it. If we could make a deal with the Rockies where they eat 5-10 million a year then that would be an amazing add to the lineup. The opt out needs to be worked out before the trade unless the package going back is light. And if they would take a light package then why trade him?

I highly, highly doubt Freeman remains here when his current deal is over. He’ll command a huge contract and salary and would make sense for an AL team to make a huge push for him.

The universal DH will be here by the time Freddie's current deal is up.

As for him signing a "huge contract", nobody's likely going to offer him anything more than the Goldschmidt deal 2 years from now. That's 5 @ $26 million. Given how close he and Chipper are, I'll bet he's willing to take a 2-3 year extension at that AAV if AA offers it tomorrow, and he'll be happy to go year-to-year after that.

Plenty of people will say I'm wrong about that, but there hasn't been another player with a personality that screams "I want to retire a Brave" since Chipper (Mac's victory lap notwithstanding), and it's likely going to be a long time before another player worth paying for decline years to do just that comes along again. Dansby wants no part of leaving either, but he's going to have to take even further below market deals to ever get that chance. If the universal DH comes to fruition, Freddie stands a realistic chance of becoming one of those almost extinct guys that makes it to the Hall while only wearing one uniform in his career.

But you have to remember, we forfeit our 2nd round pick by signing Will Smith, and if we lose JD we gain a pick after Comp Round B, so we will drop down from roughly pick 63 to pick 68-69. So it’s not an even swap. Had we not signed Smith we wouldn’t have dropped those spots.
And if we sign Ozuna, we then lose our 3rd rounder (not our 4th)

I bet he does something team friendly. He's motivated to stay. I'd wager he doesn't even make it to free agency this time.

O'Flaherty recently said something on DOBs podcast along the lines of Freeman sees himself as a Brave for his entire career and will be team friendly to make it happen.

I always look at those statements skeptically, and even if he is willing the Braves might not be if someone like Ball is rocking a 1.200 OPS in Gwinnett when Freeman's contract is up.

Are you sure that's the trade you proposed? Because I think you were advocating for trading for AAAA.J. Reed instead of Alvarez. But I could be mistaken...I'm going off of memory as well.

I made a number of different proposals centered around moving Freeman and getting prospects back. I think after the 2015 season I had Reed in one of them. He got hurt in 2016 IIRC and after that he was no longer a prospect and bouncing in the ML. I may have had him as a throw in in later trades, I don't remember.

I do remember that I had a number of trades that included Tucker, Whitley and Alvarez. I also had other iterations, including IIRC one with Celestino as the third or fourth guy coming back. Any trade may result in a prospect(s) not working out. I don't claim to have a staff to help me scout as to who comes back. I freely admit to paper scouting with the exception of a few live looks. It's the concept that I was pushing not necessarily the specifics.

Let's say only one of the players ever worked out, I'll choose Tucker. Then in 2020 you'd have a guy who's probably going to be at least a 2 WAR RF (who will be under control 5 more years and has the potential to be much more than a 2 WAR guy) and $22M to fill your 1B hole both in 2020 and 2021 and you don't have the pressure of re-signing an aging home town favorite. Not trading Freeman, you've got a 4-5 WAR guy at 1B for the next two years and then either a pick (if QO is still a thing) or an expensive and dangerous re-sign.

You are correct. HH wanted AJ Reed in almost every single Freeman trade rant.

Reed was in some but not all and not many if any after 2016 IIRC.

Go check my posting history and you might find something IDK and don't care.

But I will tell you this. I'm not CLV. Don't **** with me Nick.

He has 4 year deals, but the 4th year is an option year...
