Such a BS punishment. I get they broke the rules but in an age of technology why not let the teams use it. I mean can a team not just come up with more sophisticated system to relay signs. It is like baseball is doing everything possible to live in the freaking past.

Coppy didn't cooperate with the investigation. If he had he'd be back in the game now.

Coppy was a lying POS that refused to cooperate and cheated competitive balance measures. Gaining players and extra money is far worse than gaining knowledge that might help you win a game.

I think it is a pretty hefty penalty myself.
If I recall correctly, Coppy's actions during the investigation had as much bearing on the punishment than the things they were doing on the road, which were pretty outrageous.

The draft pick losses are likely comparable to the international penalties the Braves had. The Astros not only lose those picks but the draft pool money as well.
From a front office perspective, this is gutting. Luhnow ran arguably the best front office in baseball and now he and his assistant GM are gone (and Elias left for the Orioles the year before). This is devastating for a team towards the end of their contention window.
For the Braves, you can make a very sound argument that the international scandal was a net positive because it forced Terry to overhaul a very underwhelming front office with a progressive one.

I'd prefer the incentive-laden deal to provide more financial flexibility, but just don't think anyone would feel comfortable with Wood's injury issues - just not someone you want to count on as a contender.
Of course you can make the argument that SURELY one of Wright/Wilson/Anderson takes a step forward this year, so you surely shouldn't NEED 30+ starts out of whichever of those two you chose to spend the money on. You could counter that (sort of) by saying you feel better about counting on Hamels in the postseason if/when you get to that point.

Part of it's contention-window timing, as you say, but I agree that this does feel a lot rougher than the penalties levied against the Braves.

the Braves needed an actual starter..not a guy who may or may not give you 75 innings of likely mediocre pitching. Wood is a huge gamble if you're relying on him..Hamels isn't.
