Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

I have no issue with him being a finalist. Even with him not being qualified he was 6th in fWar in the NL and only being 0.5 behind 3rd. His era and fip were miles ahead of anyone in that group too.

Also, while the risk of Soto falling apart for whatever reason is tremendous, that's present whether there is an opt out or not.

While it is certainly to the player's favor to have the opt out to get more money or more years or just change scenery, it should be a minor concern for the team.

In practice, you see it turn out that way.

But I don't really see the driving necessity behind the Braves signing Soto that would force them into the type of deal they've avoided completely.

Skenes is a finalist for the Cy and he didn’t even have enough IP to qualify for anything.

good, MLB needs to celebrate the stars. He is special and he is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game.. celebrate him and promote him as much as possible to grow the game.

Giving Soto $600M+ is so far out of character for AA that there's almost zero chance it could happen.

However, if AA was ever going to buy a generational talent, Soto would be the guy to do it. He fits perfectly at the top of this lineup between Acuna/Riley, providing the elite OBP this team needs in front of all the power. He fills a position the Braves historically have struggled to put an MLB-quality player.

And, if AA is going up to the $281M cap, the money is there to make it happen...barely, but it's there.

Sasaki will probably knock another suitor off the list for Fried and Burnes. The Dodgers would have probably went after 1 of the 2. The Dodgers won’t pursue Soto but will Adames no doubt. AA has been buying top international guys the last few years to replenish the farm. If he ever was gonna buy a player Soto is the guy to do it. If they are planning to sell the team a guy like Soto makes it a lot more attractive.

I love Fried, but something tells me he's not going to get uber-rich (super-rich maybe) in this year's FA go-round. I would be (but likely will be) surprised if Fried gets anything more than a 3-year deal. But I agree with you that if Sasaki lands with the Dodgers, that will send a considerable ripple through the FA pitching market. My guess is both teams and agents are going to want to see where Sasaki ends up before making a move.

LaMonte Wade is on the trade block, per Passan. If AA thinks he can handle left field, I think he would be a pretty solid strong side of a platoon. He can really hit against righties.

Passan: Catcher Travis d’Arnaud and the Los Angeles Angels are in agreement on a two-year, $12 million contract, sources tell ESPN.

We could do a lot worse than 6 million a year for a quality back up catcher, and even for the 8 million dollar option. Of course, he wouldn’t have been a back up here, but still.

AA wanted to take the decision out of Snit's hands so he had to start Murphy lol

Yes, I know about Baldwin and I completely understand not giving him that contract with Baldwin in the wings and with Murphy already here. I just hope he spends the savings on something meaningful.

Braves signed RHP Enoli Paredes to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Paredes represents an intriguing gamble for the Braves after compiling a strong 1.66 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 16/10 K/BB ratio across 21 2/3 innings (18 appearances) last season between the Brewers and Cubs. The 29-year-old righty, who has made 55 appearances in the big leagues dating back to 2020, will compete in spring training for a spot in Atlanta’s season-opening bullpen.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that Charlie Morton plans to pitch in 2025.
Morton is now 41 — Tuesday was his birthday — and he’s coming off a season with Atlanta where he forged a 4.19 ERA while showing some decent durability with 165 2/3 innings. He’ll assuredly be looking at another one-year deal, but Morton has been effective enough to earn that right to be in the back of someone’s rotation in 2025. Atlanta should be considered the favorites just based on their history.
