Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

There are at least a dozen players that would have significantly helped this roster who have signed elsewhere for amounts that were not outrageous. I'm an AA defender, but there's nothing else to call this but a failure to this point.

I agree. I do think there's some guys still out there though that turn this offseason around. Who knows if we will do it though

I'd perfectly fine with Kelenic and whoever in LF if we somehow got Bichette or Correa. Or vice versa and upgraded LF and kept Arcia another year. But SP has to get a big piece and so does the BP.

If Acuna's out the first month, i think you gotta make a move for an outfielder. Arcia's fine but if they could get Kim on a 1 year deal, thats good. SP wise, Flaherty is still out there if he'd take a 1 year deal.

Not sure what BP pieces are out there. Estevez, Helsey from the Cards, idk what else. If AA had an offer for Hoffman and was in on Scott then hes not pinching pennies. I do think at some point he will make a move to improve the big league team, just dont know if it'll be enough given how loaded LA is.

I'm not really worried about LAD to be honest. Teams that spend like that have so much pressure on them that it trickles down to the players. Halsey and Fedde would be a good trade for us. They are both FA after the season so they aren't long term commitments and are both what we need. The Cardinals are going nowhere so they should be available.

I’ve been hoping the Braves would be the team benefitting from a SP’s market collapsing by signing him to a 1 year deal. Maybe this is the year that happens.

If AA somehow pulls Flaherty on a 1 year proven deal, and then gives him a QO after a 3-4 win 2025, we will all be very pleased with the offseason.

If AA somehow buys low on bichette and then gets a team friendly extension for a 4 win SS, we will all be very pleased with the offseason.

If AA grabs Profar on a 2 year deal and he goes on to be a 3 win LFer, we will all be very pleased with the offseason.

There are still moves to be made. It seems like AA struck out so far, but there’s zero chance he doesn’t have solid backup plans.

Very frustrating off season for sure. But I'm interested to see how these next few weeks develop. There is still some talent out there and most of the teams who had plans to spend this off season have already spent. The rest of the league is either cutting payroll or holding steady due to revenue uncertainty with the regional tv deals. So I really don't know how this will play out.

I don't think the Cardinals have accepted that they're going nowhere. They do match up well though as far as our needs.

This is complete pollyanna nonsense.

It's been a horrendous offseason and unless something totally unforeseen occurs, the Braves have gotten worse while their rivals have gotten better.

There is absolutely nothing to suggest "good things are coming", and that may be the least ridiculous part of your post.

Damn 😂😂😂

For sure. But expecting them to be MVP-level Ronald and Cy Young-level Strider is a bit wishful thinking. They’re more likely to be fighting nagging injuries.

It seems almost equally likely they will be more or less themselves. Probably there is some data in that but I feel like stars coming back from injury are generally still really good until they've hit the stage where everything is breaking down.

Though to my mind avoiding Tommy John is more risky than going ahead with it at this point. But I'm not a surgeon so I do t guess that matters much.

Basically what has been said about many of his offseasons and trade deadlines and somehow it has turned out ok.

Some markets are better than others. He has money to spend and quite a lot of resources, but they aren't unlimited.

Sometimes it doesn't go your way. Better to try again later than spend the money for something less valuable.

Last offseason, the only consternation was whether the team could have picked up another mid- to back-end rotation piece. Guys like Lorenzen were tossed around. There was also discussion about whether they should have aimed higher than Duvall for the platoon piece with Kelenic. But by and large, AA made the moves and didn't wait until the last minute. We went into the season with the bullpen a clear strength on the paper, a good rotation, and a good offense. For the most part, people were satisfied.

This offseason, so far (still some dwindling time):
•Nothing done to replace an ace pitcher or replace the loss of 339 innings between Fried and Morton. We are banking on Strider coming back with no complications. We are banking Sale staying healthy (and actually being available at the most important point of the season). We're banking on Lopez avoiding the fatigue he showed the second half of last season. We are banking on any sophomore slump from Schwellenbach being minimal. We are banking on Anderson being healthy and somehow getting back to being an effective MLB pitcher. Or we are banking on Elder having impeccable control to where he can be somewhat effective. Or we are banking on another young guy coming up and sticking and not being yo-yoed back and forth.
•Nothing done to replace the loss of two of our top three high-leverage relievers. We're banking on Iglesias staying healthy and coming close to duplicating a great season. We're banking on Pierce Johnson not walking everyone and Aaron Bummer having better groundball luck. We're banking on someone like Perdomo or Kerr staying healthy and being effective enough to be the third lefty.
•Nothing done offensively as far as adding more plate discipline and speed to the lineup. Maybe the new hitting coach helps get them back to having a plan at the plate? We are banking on perhaps Harris and Ozzie gaining more patience. On Olson not completely disappearing for six weeks. On guys staying healthy. On Kelenic not striking out more than a third of the time. On Arcia not being a total black hole. We don't have any semblance of a productive bench at the moment.
•While the importance can be debated, I also don't think the continued loss of key clubhouse guys (Freeman, Swanson, TDA, Morton, Fried, Minter) is nothing.

I agree with a lot of this. SP and high leverage RP should be the top 2 needs. They still have time to fill those 2 holes but AA has a lot of work left to do and options are coming off the board. I would have taken any bet that we would be at this date and not 1 move has been made for the MLB club. That's insane.

Santander to Toronto per Morosi. No terms on the deal yet. Looks like 5 years, dollars not discolosed yet.

AA is catching so much crap right now from pretty much every media outlet saying he's failed and has had the worst offseason in his tenure and is on the hot seat. I know he'll do something but sometimes you have to overpay to get the piece you need and quit being so arrogant. One of Minter or Scott should be on this team right now. Sucks to see the offseason waste away.
