Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

FWIW, ESPN also gave it a C. Said it's a good move regardless, but it will be great if his renaissance is real.

I’ll take it. Switch hitting All Star who can hit anywhere in the order and can actually play multiple positions. Seemed to figure it out last year. We will see, but I’d much rather take the “risk” on him than him going to the Mets or Phillies and repeating last year.

Grade C means, by definition, an average move.

AA held out until the end of January to give a guy the exact contract he was projected to get to fill literally the worst position on the roster that obviously needed to be upgraded. There was nothing creative or noteworthy about it. So it was an average move a GM should make.

Anyone calling it more than that is just happy AA finally made a move.

I get it. Makes sense. We are still a better team now than we were earlier today, so that makes me happy. Mets fans are upset too which always makes me happy.

Another Twins option, if they’re looking to lop off payroll around the margins instead of the core roster, is picking up Willi Castro, who has value (at $6.4m, final season before FA) for the privilege of paying Chris Paddack, who doesn’t have value ($7.5m, final season before FA). Might have to sweeten the pot with a young midlevel pitcher, but Castro would be a great versatility add who can play SS, while Paddack could at least be auditioned in a swing role.

Totals up to ~$14m, which, along with Profar’s $12m, means there’d still be another $5-7m for marginal additions.

If the velo jump is real it’s a A

Average move with upside

If that's the case and AA is gonna actually spend next offseason then I can somewhat see it but when has AA spent big on a FA? So AA is gonna compete with the Dodgers, Yankees, and other teams for Tucker, Bichette, and Cease? Common sense will tell you from AA's track record that won't happen. He's not gonna be the highest bidder on anybody. So I have 0 faith in him getting under the tax so he can spend next year. But sacrificing this year for next is never smart and if he doesn't get another good SP and RP then this offseason has been a failure and there's no way around it. I've defended AA more than most but if that happens and we fall on our face this year bc of his reluctance then boot the guy out.

The Braves probably will not be the winner for any long range FA deal next year. I agree.

Saw the Twins were interested in Cease. Why??? I thought they were cutting payroll and he's only signed for this year.

Guarav, who works for Baseball Prospectus, confirmed Flaherty is in the cards for the Braves but they really want Cease. The holdup is they want Baldwin and that's not happening. But talks are ongoing.

The White Sox wanted Baldwin and we wouldn't trade him. We would have Crochet right now if AA was willing to. The Pads will hold out but hopefully give in without him in the deal. AA probably has a deadline set for a trade and once they reach that he'll make a play for Flahtery whom I'm guessing he already knows the price for. Cease would completely change the whole team up. IMO that would be the best rotation in baseball. Also I'm sure AA wants a window to negotiate an extension.

I wouldn't hate Flaherty on a 1 year deal. But I don't want to tie up future payroll with mid tier FAs. That's something poorly run franchises do.

Agreed. 1 year or 1 year with a team option but that's it. He must be asking for a lot to still be out there.
