Oh Mauricio, My Mauricio

As for that "excellent" slider Chapman had when he started out in that 2011 season...

(23 years old) 50 IP, 3.60 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 7.4 BB/9, 1.73 K/BB

Cabrera's numbers in Mississippi before being called up:

(22 years old) 33.2 IP, 3.21 ERA, 1.248 WHIP, 5.9 BB/9, 1.59 K/BB

The point is that his fastball is dominant enough to have hope that he has that type of upside. I've seen it mentioned several times that he's looked "bored" at times and that part of the lack of development of his secondary stuff could be attributed to the fact that he just hasn't needed to focus on it - I'd think the hope is that calling him up shows him just how dominant he could be if he just had an average second pitch.

HOw can he be bored, he's gotten lit up like a xmas tree in the minor leagues. He's not dominating guys and losing interest.

The problem is anyone can hit a 100 mph fastball when that is all you have to worry about. Until he develops control and an offspeed pitch, he isn't going to be successful. They thought of him developing both is intriguing and makes it exciting to thing about, but it is not an easy process.

Him not missing bats in the minor leagues like you would expect for something that throws that hard is a concern, but at 22 with a 100 mph heater, its fun to watch.

To add to that, he's not missed bats at all.

What the heck do any of his numbers have to do with the quality of his slider? I watched him pitch when he came up, his slider was ridiculous. He made many major league hitters look foolish with it. The fact you are trying to compare AA numbers for Mauricio to major league numbers for Chapman is absurd anyway. Chapman had a K rate of almost 13 per 9 both in the minors and from the moment he came up and Mauricio has a career K rate of 7.8 in the minors, there is no comparison.

And if Mauricio has been acting bored in the minors that is pretty pathetic, because outside of this year he's been pretty much terrible in the minors.

Yeah, Chapman's slider was always filthy, his issue was control. His first full season he posted a 7.38 BB/9 , but once he got it down in the 4's, he was lights out.

You are too focused on the velocity. Kinbrel had a much better fastball. The deception he creates is amazing.

Cabrera is more similar to Joel Zumaya or Kelvin Herrera if he can get that 2nd pitch down.

Not a lot of Ks. I'd need to see more Ks.

I have not watched him pitch. So maybe he's getting a lot of week contact.

But the box score isn't like Kimbrel or Chapman where it's 2-3 K when they are on.

He's got to strike out more than he walks to be a high leverage guy. A lot more K than BB. He's not there yet.

I think we take for granted how nasty Kimbrel was.

I mean he was nothing but filth and he was putting up ridiculous numbers to where people thought he would be in the running for Cy Young Award.

Wouldn't hurt my feelings if Johnson and EOF were DFA'd at this point. Mauricio's four-seamer is averaging 100.75 mph, and I'm not seeing much in the way of control issues - looks like he believes he belongs at the MLB level (which is half the battle IMO). Was impressed with his composure last night.

Sounds like Simmons is progressing, Janas is ready for a look, Marksberry's still mowing lefties down, and Minter's obviously being fast-tracked. I'd love to see the vets cleared out of the way so we can use the second half to start auditioning for next year's pen. Get these guys plenty of experience the rest of the way, and maybe we won't need to spend money on vets this winter.

RHPs

Vizcaino, Simmons, Cabrera, Withrow, Janas, Morris, plus Jenkins/Gant/Perez/De La Cruz

LHPs

Minter, Cervenka, Krol, Alvarez, Rodriguez, Marksberry, Banuelos, Biddle

Maybe its just me, but I don't see ONE reason to spend on vets for the rotation or the BP next year. There won't be spots.

Agreed, particularly in the bullpen. Unless we trade Julio we really should have our staff made up of Julio, Folty, Wisler, Gant, and whoever is pitching the best of Whalen/Jenkins/Blair with Newcomb or Sims moving up when ready. Really zero need to clog up anyone's path to the majors at this point.

With relievers there is volatility of performance. You often see a guy have a very good season and that's it. I think we would be well-advised to get one guy this off-season with a consistent track record to help with the high-leverage innings.

Meh, I see being able to cobble together 10-15 arms from Ex starters, current BP guys, and guys at AA and AAA that can hold it down just fine.
