Oklahoma Frat

this is a big state school. if a major frat is not only displaying racism, but explicitly shouting it because they're dumb, ignorant ****s, then someone should be punished. there is no room for that, no way to defend it, it's not ok. legal trouble? na. school punishment because of a damaged rep? sure.

I see the same monikers here that thought Jameis Winston should have been crucified over an incident where he used a not so polite word referring to a womans business end in public - defending a white fraternity's right to publicly use a word that is meant to culturally denigrate black folk.

Funny world we live in

I think they are expelling the kids strictly because of football recruiting. Otherwise they would probably just suspend them and make them go to racial sensitivity training. I'm not sure if there is legal grounds for Oklahoma to do what they did though. That's the question. Sure, they could probably expel them for discrimination. But if it's just for speech then I'm not sure they legally can in this case. It will be interesting to see what happens.

There's a big difference between what is legal (shutting down this fraternity or firing the Duck Dude) and what is right, sadly. I defended the Duck Dude's right to speak his mind (even though I disagreed with most if not all of what he said) AND the legal right of that show/network to fire him for breaking the "morals" part of his contract. I just think they shouldn't have, unless they come out and say, "we don't care about freedom of speech, unless it's free speech we agree with". Getting rid of the hypocrisy, which let's face it, we all do sometimes, would be a good start.

Here's another good idea (to me anyway), let's get rid of that awful word once and for all. I mean let's completely eliminate it from the English language. I would be 110% in agreement with that. Who do you think wouldn't be though, other than that one fraternity?

That's the question that is really bothering you from this story? Really?

Classic Goldie. Do you support free speech or nah?

What these kids said was disgusting, but I don't think Oklahoma is going to be able to keep them out if they fight it in court.

Classic goldfly?

Im for free speech. Thought that was pretty much noted around here

And "or nah"? Are you a 12 year old viner?

My guess is that there is a "student conduct clause" under which the University of Oklahoma can suspend a student for certain behaviors, some of which may be legal. I'm not sure on that, but "freedom of speech" has never meant "freedom to say anything you want."

I am not a fan of punishing people for what they say in private. These are kids who were probably indoctrinated by someone else and dont have the critical thinking skills and maturity to see through it. I would think we should want racists to get a college education. The frat should be demolished but the kids shouldnt be expelled.

Would be long overdue.

I came along in the fraternity system. There is simply no advantage to it anymore. A few bad apples have really put the squeeze on the entire group. A guy having a house party has WAY more freedom to do so than a fraternity. I enjoyed my time in the system. We did some good in the community as well but many people probably wouldn't believe it (Mentoring, volunteering, and fundraising along the way) We had a lot of fun, but it was a great learning experience for the real world as well. We had several interesting incidents, and they all turned out alright. Most of them having to do with too much alcohol which isn't unique to college fraternities.

I agree. These kids weren't saying anything out in the public or in front of blacks.

There's not one person in here, who didn't make racist comments or jokes when we were college aged.

And everyone put it on YouTube as well to make certain the world knew of our stupidity. When it goes on YouTube, it becomes public.

I can't believe there is anyone defending these guys (and the house mother).
