Oklahoma Frat

I am well aware.

I'm not defending anyone. I'm defending yours and my right to say what we want as long as it doesn't infringe on someone's rights.

If a black frat on that campus released that same video, no one would care about it. But if it's wrong coming out of someone's mouth it should be wrong coming out of everyone else's mouth. If what was said is so bad shouldn't every student who says it get the same punishment?

I think this is a fair point.

I am absolutely defending their right to be stupid and say racist things.

I am also absolutely defending the right of the university to enforce whatever code of conduct clause they have established to deal with behavior they deem is detrimental to the university's image or code of ethics.

Tangential point, but relevant, I hope: it blows my mind that **** like this goes on. When we on this board get on the merry-go-round about race in America, I hope that some of y'all will remember this when talking about our "post-racial" or even "post-racist" society.

Total BS. You don't think that the comments made and broadcast didn't create an environment--or semblance of an environment--that is unfavorable to African-Americans? And if an African-American frat did the same thing in a way that embarrassed the institution (national chapter or university) the same thing should have happened. You can argue that nothing would happen in that instance, but you can't prove the negative.

Just face up to it. These knuckleheads embarrassed themselves, their frat, and the University of Oklahoma. They've earned their punishment.

Sounds like you don't love freedom.

It is my suspicion that many of those who say we are post-racial are white.... Do you think?

May be the first time I've ever agreed with you Bedell.

Seems that most of the "we're post-racial" comments comes from people who say "see we elected a black guy, time to stop talking about it".

They aren't dumb and stupid that is why and you would see it on YouTube, Tweet, Reddit if that is the case.

White people do say dumb things in regards to race and they should know better that their own kind will turn them in, tape it or video it. Blacks say stupid things against other blacks that are much more offensive but agreeable to whites. Like blacks calling me and Stacy Dash Uncle Toms and what not that hurts worst than the "N" word from a black, but I am not going to make a spectacle of it.

I doubt our society will never be post-racial. I doubt if any society ever will be post-racial or post-ethnic. There will always be difference and difference can often be stratified with a division into "us" and "them." I guess the goal should be to respect the differences without necessarily subscribing to the customs of the different. I think that's the closest any society can ever really get.

Be careful Sav, it'll hurt your good reputation. ;-)

Well said. I can't really imagine—nor do I hope for—a society without any sense of ethnic, cultural, or religious identity. I just hope for one where everyone feels solidarity for our common identity and, as you say, respect for our differences.

It's worth remembering that while the video may fall under the "free speech" umbrella, it was neither speech nor an exercise of individual free will, at least not for all. It was group sing-a-long at a fraternity event and probably forced onto the group by one or two racist minded leaders. I'm going to imagine that there were a few in the group, perhaps even the majority, who were not comfortable with it. I think the Pres did the right thing.

The grandma is probably beyond help.

Are we really drawing parallels between mainstream society and collegiate Greek life here?

One of my friends in college was a Sig Ep and he invited me to a rush event where I watched a group of pledges dressed in diapers be made to suck a doorknob.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah I attended a Halloween Party a few years ago hosted by a frat and the pledges had to do some bizarre stuff in front of the crowd to get initiated.
