Olivera Suspended Until August 1

I have a problem suspending players for crimes they havent been convicted of. This is part of a bigger issue where its becoming socially acceptable to deny men due process. Your being led to believe that DV in sports in epidemic and that DV is perpetrated only by men.

I have a problem with the government punishing people for crimes they haven't been convicted of. The government has a monopoly of power and can use it to take away your life, liberty, and property.

Olivera has an employment contract to do a job. As part of that job he's subject to the CBA. Under that CBA, a domestic violence policy was created. This policy allows MLB to investigate the facts of alleged domestic violence incidents and issue punishments for those incidents. If Olivera didn't want to work under that policy then he could, at any time, quit. He could walk away from that contract and go do another job.

I have no problem with MLB and the players negotiating a policy about domestic violence. We're talking about two private entities here negotiating the terms of employment. In fact, the players association has far, far more bargaining power than the average employee has.

As far as due process goes, I absolutely firmly believe in due process in the legal system for everyone. I think there's a real problem of people being guilty until proven innocent in a lot of areas. Olivera deserves his day in court and deserves to get a fair shake there. I'll let him, his employer, and his union do what they want as far as their relationship goes.

I find it interesting that the suspension ended up at the round number of 82 so that he didn't need to be activated until 8/1, the day after the non-waiver trade deadline. Seems like the league let the Braves influence that small detail.
