Olivera traded for Kemp

I don't understand how defense in RF could be important but LF is irrelevant.

Neither are irrelevant, but both are close.

According to Inside Edge fielding, he's made all 144 routine (90-100%) chances that he's gotten. He's made 14 of 19 likely (60-90%) chances. And he's made 4-11 even chances.

So basically, his "atrocious" defense means he didn't get to 2 balls he should've gotten to. I'll live with it. He's got a big boomstick.

Defensive metrics for outfielders playing at least 1000 innings between 2015 and 2016:

Matt Kemp ranks 90th out of 90 in UZR / 150

Matt Kemp ranks 87th out of 90 in DRS

I'm actually kind of curious to see what this will look like day to day.

See the raw data on actual chances I posted above.

Bad knees man.

Spoke to my buddy who's a huge Pads fan, played college ball, season ticket holder there. He says the Kemp/defense thing is totally overblown. He's okay, he says. I'm not a big defensive metric fan, either. I just don't think it matters that much on the corners.

The guy's gonna hit .280 with 100 dingers over the next 3+ years. We've got good defense next to him, it'll be fine.

I imagine the happiest guy in the world right now is Freddie Freeman. He's gonna see some strikes for the first time in two years. That's what's caused the slumps, expanding the zone, getting frustrated.

This is a good add.

I don't love it. But he could be a guy that has some value down the road.

I could see an al club wanting him in 17 or 18 if he gets better luck and we pay half or more. So I don't think he blocks anyone.

Lf is a black hole since klesko? Gant?

They didn't get him to trade him. He's gonna be in Atlanta through '19. And I predict we'll be happy he is.

You might be a little optimistic, but I am a little surprised at the overall negativity on this site and elsewhere regarding Kemp.

Maybe a tad. But I think I'm balancing all the guys who go into their saber shells to crunch the numbers when an event happens.

Don't overthink this. It's a good deal.

As far as I can tell, Kemp has had two major injuries. One to his left shoulder that was caused by a collision with an outfield fence. It led to surgery on his labrum and rotator cuff after the 2012 season. He also required surgery at the end of the 2013 season to clean up the AC joint of his left shoulder. The other major injury was to the talus bone of his left foot. This was treated via microfracture surgery of the talus bone after the 2013 season.

The Kemp trade reflects the conclusion on the part of the front-office that it is less risky to take on a contract like Kemp's with 3 years left on it than to try make a big splash on a 6 year deal for Cespedes. There is no guarantee we could have signed Cespedes even if we had gone all out.

I suspect that there is a similar conclusion that it makes more sense to take on a contract like McCann's than to go after free agent catchers or try to extent Lucroy.

Doing moves that involve contracts of players with limited or negative surplus value also reduces the need to trade assets from the farm system.

Finally, I don't think today's trade implies that one of Markakis, Inciarte or Smith will be moved. Having some outfield depth would be a good thing.

Jace is a 769 ops vs rh
Kemp is over 1000 ops vs lefties. Over 800 last yr

You platoon kemp and d sub him late and he might give u some value.

I think you're exactly right.
