Olivera traded for Kemp

He's really bad defensively, the numbers don't lie there. But he'll fulfill the main purpose, which is to allow the FO to act like they are making moves to compete, and make the offense look better, which helps sell more tickets. He's unlikely to add any wins over what we have now, but I see it as better than most of the alternatives as the FO has to make moves of some sort moving into the new stadium. The only real issue with adding Kemp and say Mac will be we will really need to find a good deal for Julio this offseason (or at the deadline next year I suppose if the FO is living in the imaginary world where we are competing for the playoffs next year), because I doubt we'll be a potential playoff type team until late 2018/early 2019 if those are our major moves.

Yeah I am totally fine with this deal and deals similar. We gave up no talent and just spent some excess money. When we trade actual talent I expect to see good talent in return as well.

If the Dodgers were to put Puig on waivers, we'd have first dibs on him. Anyone think this could be a move we might be interested in? On one hand, he's super talented and could anchor our lineup for a few years. On the other hand, he's a headcase that could undermine the work of the veteran leadership of the team.

Head case, I think. And the trend line on his OPS tells an ugly story.

It's crazy. I know this is a super small-minded way of looking at it, but JUST STOP BEING AN A-HOLE. Jeez. You have such an amazing opportunity.

It's how I feel about so many football players getting busted for pot. Just STOP. Play hard, make your money, and smoke the stuff after you retire.

What a fantastic trade. Dumped Olivera's dead weight and brought in a guy with some pop. No downside to this IMO. Finally we have a not-completely-terrible #4 hitter.

yeah but you can't hit HRs with men on base if your WAR is below 1.

No but you can give up a lot of those homeruns back on defense. Kemp is not a good player but he is better offensively than what we have. It's not hard to see this as both an improvement offensively but understand that that's not saying much with the way this team is currently constructed.

Kemp has had 144 routine chances this year. He's handled 144 of them. And 99.1% over his career.

I just don't think he can hurt much in LF. And I know we can use that boomstick.

And Markakis is at 99% on his routine chances this year. Bad defenders still make those plays. They just don't make much of anything else. Kemp is an OF that turns singles into doubles and that adds up.

Yes, he can catch routine flyballs. That is not how defense is judged. Anyone on this board can catch routine flyballs.

Um, I can go out there and catch routine fly balls. So can every single professional baseball player. If you think that's all it takes to be a good OFer I'm not sure what to say. So I won't.

Jeff Sullivan on FG just echoed my exact thoughts on the Kemp trade:

Roscoe
9:52 I'm a Braves fan. I'm also a Rays fan. Does the "goodness" of the Duffy-Moore deal outweigh the "badness" of the Kemp deal? Is it a net gain in trade deadline smiley faces for me?

Jeff Sullivan
9:52 I think the Duffy-Moore deal could be justified on both ends. I don't think you can really easily justify the Kemp deal, or what it indicates about the front office
Sorry, that's a net loss in trade-deadline smiley faces

So yeah, I don't think the thought process behind the Kemp trade was good at all. They needlessly threw good money after bad. They did not have to take on a bad player plus more money to get rid of Olivera. They could have just dumped Olivera.

I challenge anyone to find an unbiased legitimate analysis (meaning not a tweet from some idiot AJC reader) that thinks this is a good move by the Braves.

All trades don't have to be good or bad. This move does improve the offense without sacrificing the two most important commodities to the Braves right now. Draft picks and prospects.

And for those that think Inciarte is going to cover for Kemp:

Ben

10:11 How much does having an elite defender in CF cancel out a bad defender in LF? Specifically referring to Inciarte & Kemp. Does Inciarte's elite defense help decrease the impact of Kemp's bad defense? Is this just wishful thinking?

Jeff Sullivan

10:12 Pretty much all wishful thinking. There is very little overlap between outfielder ranges. Tons of batted balls that will be up to Kemp and Kemp alone

That's most certainly false. Elite centerfielders do impact those in the corners. See Bourn and Prado and then Andruw with everybody else from that era.

And finally:

John
10:53 Why is the kemp trade bad? Oliveras also dead weight, plus hes a garbage person. Dingers/marquee name for the fans, bad play to help get a better pick.

Jeff Sullivan
10:53 The Braves could've just rid themselves of Olivera by designating him for assignment
Didn't need to pay Matt Kemp thirty-two million dollars

They could have used that cash to sign a player who is actually good.
