Right, and it also locks a lineup spot in at 1 WAR. One less position for a bad baseball team to add a good player. Why would a bad team spend money to add another bad player? They have plenty of those players already! Maybe they are trying to corner the market on terrible players and create a new market inefficiency?

Because now is not the time for the Braves to go out and sign a 25 million a year outfielder to help them win. That is later down the road when are on the verge of getting over the hump. And again you are ignoring the 8 million it takes off the books in 2020 which is a factor for when Albies and Swanson likely hit arbitration for the first time.

That not really true. Daniel Murphy was signed for 3/37.5. Elite middle relievers get less. Andrew Miller was signed for less. Elite international FAs sign for less. Vet middle of the rotation starters get close. Granted there are many FAs that don't make it, but you have to have trust in yourself to be able to spend that money wisely.
That really doesn't apply because you are spending a hell of a lot to save that 8 mil in 2020. Why can't you just chop off 8 million over the next 3 years and put it towards 2020?
