Opening roster guesses

Pipe-dream Lineup:

CF- Upton
RF- Heyward
LF- Upton
1B- Freeman
C- Gattis
2B- La Stella
3B- Johnson
SS- Simmons

Bench- Laird, Doumit, Uggla, Schafer, Pena

SP- Medlen
SP- Minor
SP- Teheran
SP- Beachy
SP- Garcia

CL- Kimbrel
SU- Walden
SU- Avilan
RP- Carpenter
RP- Wood
RP- Vasquez
RP- Varvaro

When Floyd and Venters are ready, Floyd bumps Garcia into Varvaro's spot and Venters takes Wood's in the pen and they send Alex down to stretch him out for the stretch run. I'd expect the first half to be relatively flexible, with Gacia potentially making a spot start for Beachy (or even Teheran) once or twice. I also fully expect Gamel to hit his stride and force the front office to either find a taker for Uggla regardless of the price, and that La Stella has the everyday job by the break.

By the time the deadline rolls around, I hope to see the same 8 regulars (regardless of order), a bench of Laird, Doumit, Gamel, Schafer, and Pena, and a staff of:

SP- Teheran
SP- Minor
SP- Medlen
SP- Wood
SP- Floyd

and

CL- Kimbrel
SU- Avilan
SU- Walden
RP- Venters
RP- Carpenter
RP- Vasquez
RP- Beachy

(Ideally Floyd looks good for 15 starts and can be moved for something of value because Beachy's healthy, but I'd personally prefer to limit Wood's IPs early in the year and Beachy's late (if needed) to have two lefties in the rotation.)

Gearrin is a popular whipping boy for this board for some reason. I don't get it really, as you pointed out he was great in 11-12. Even his bad season wasn't that terrible. The key with him though is mainly positioning him against RHB. And not being used as a whipping boy.

I'm not opposed to running arms into the ground, quite frankly GEarrin and co are replaceable. You don't run Kimbrel or Venters into the ground because you'll need them in the playoffs for big outs but Gearrin and co can be somewhat replaced by guys in AAA.

What was surprising about Gearrin in 2013 was that he did well against LHB but RHB lit him up. It was the total opposite of what he had done in his career before. In 2013 LHB only had a wOBA of .270 against Gearrin while RHB hit him to the tune of a .374 wOBA. There doesn't seem to be much reason for why that happened either.

Random. Small samples. He is a ROOGY.

So in your scenario, there's no Doumit. Hardly think the Braves would trade a former number 1 draft pick for a guy who's not even going to make their team.

There is no way anyone gets the bullpen right. There is always one or two guys who come out of nowhere.

It does seem like though there are a lot of options.

All we need is Gattis in that starting lineup and we will be fine!

Feel people are selling Buchter short. He and Vasquez were on fire all winter.

Buchter will benefit from the lack of competition from the left side and will probably make the team out of spring training. Vasquez will face a much more competitive situation.

If Vasquez comes out firing 97 mph strikes sidearm competition over lol.

I don't have a problem with Gearrin making the squad, but if he's pitching serious/high leverage innings, I think we're in trouble. Wren is pretty good at scrubbing the waiver wire for guys and I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of the bullpen spots go to guys who won't be in camp with us when spring training starts.
