A map that puts the diversity of the US at the level of Middle Eastern countries can be dismissed out of hand. I've had a couple of hundred employees who immigrated to the US from both northern and southern Africa. I don't think any of them would claim that the cultural differences in their countries came close to those of the US. They were universally shocked by things like ethnic food sections in grocery stores. They were also the most racist towards black Americans of any group I've ever encountered. I was forced to fire several for transgressions along those lines.

Well that's why I raised the question of whether an index of diversity exists. How to define it is a thorny issue and often at odds with our common perception of diversity. Yeah, I can confirm something similar to the latter. I know Dominicans and Jamaicans who look down on African Americans.

The Middle East does have a lot of small and not-so-small groups that are very distinct (maybe not in appearance). Such as the Druze and Yazidi. They don't look too different but they have been culturally isolated from bigger groups for a long time, with very little intermarriage. Africa has a lot of groups like that too. The San people in Southern Africa actually look different. Different color skin. Different frames.

Yeah. The differences between LA white girl and white mill worker guy in eastern Kentucky are a lot more significant than what classifies as multiple races in some of African countries, but they won't be counted as such in any study along those lines, because the people doing the survey have a goal in mind for the results.

One of my favorite WWII novels by Alan Furth "A Polish Officer" somehow has a different title in Germany. Funny how these things work. Alan obviously doesn't care as long as the royalty checks don't bounce.
