OT: Absolutely Hilarious...

<B>"What is a clvclv"</B>
DOB tweeted a picture of his BA Prospect Handbook today and mentioned it was "dated" since it didn't have the Braves' and Padres' systems updated.

Lesson To Be Learned Here:

Don't poke fun at another publication that also physically sells paper copies of its stories when you're the beat reporter for one of those publications that doesn't pay for your BA online subscription or for you to get your Prospect handbook delivered via next-day delivery.

There have been plenty of updated lists posted on their site, and I've had my Handbook for a week!!! Wonder if the AJC would consider a replacement for good ol' Dave?!?!?

 :tchop:  :tchop:

I've wish they would replace him, but I think we're stuck with him for a while. I am not sure which is worse between him and Bowman for the Braves MLB site.

I don't even see anything mildly humorous, much less hilarious.

I like DOB. He seems like a decent guy and he has solid sportswriter skills. AJC and the Braves could do A LOT worse.

Is that you Dave? What album are you listening to???

(Sorry, couldn't help it.)

The AJC could absolutely do worse, which is just a reflection on the state of baseball writing these days.

Genuine question: can anyone remember the last major piece of news Bowman or O'Brien broke?

Bowman seems to pick up information way before O'Brien, but it's never concrete and relatively ambiguous.

Genuine question: Can anyone remember the last time who broke a news story mattered?

Depends on how you look at it, if you're supposed to be "the guy" for your team or one of "the guys" then you should have built up decent enough contacts over the years that you get some inside info thrown your way and break a story or two. The fact that they are 40 + minutes late on everything, in this day and age, would seem to suggest that they aren't very good at their job.

If you're asking whether it really matters that, for example, Bob Nightengale had the Gattis trade before anyone else when we'd know officially a few hours later, then sure, that's a fair point. Still, reporters clearly think it matters, and I don't think DOB and Bowman are opting out of the scoop race due to deeply considered philosophical objections.

And the other point is simply that DOB and Bowman don't add much value for fans. I don't much value Rosenthal's analysis, but he does provide some inside information and he seems like a decent sort, so I find him useful. Most analysts don't break news, but they enhance my understanding of the game, so I find them useful. Joe Posnanski isn't a reporter and his analysis is rarely original, but his writing is exceptional, so I find him useful.

What do DOB and Bowman add to the equation? Forget breaking news if you don't care about it. Do they perform high-level analysis? Are they writing deeply reported feature stories that bring a tear to your eye?

See I think the thing that many forget is, we are the true die hards who are plugged in 24/7 to all things Braves. The beatwriters are not aiming to please us, but more so the common fan who is not in the know on things like we all are.

I have reason to believe that both Bowman and O'Brien do not have the sources, nor have the skill and ability, to be championship caliber writers.

Thanks for that. I was starting to feel kind of lonely with that opinion.

Funny story … I sold a screenplay (still in development hell) that featured a baseball manager named David O’Brien. The studio suits do a name check to ensure that they aren’t likely to get sued. The report came back: No conflict; there is no David O’Brien associated with baseball.

Agreed. Plus DOB seems to shoot down interest that we have in players if it doesn't make sense to him without checking sometimes. Bowman isn't as smart as DOB, obviously, but I do believe he breaks more stories and feeds us more information (and that includes times when he may be off a bit but by sharing something he hears we can read between the lines, etc).

The last story I recall DOB being given credit for breaking was actually a story he got from another person reporting it on the internet.

Yea, I was laughing recently over DOB reporting about one of our recent signings a few days after we'd discussed the signing on this forum. :)

Why, Matt Capps, just an hour or so ago.
