Pretty much why i dont care much for baseball, can buy a championship.
What have the Dodgers won lately?

But he's throwing those warm-up tosses for free: that's where your bargain resides.

We have to work hard and build quality teams to make it to the playoffs let alone win the division.
When Heyward, Freeman, Android, Medlen, Minor, Kimbrel all get too expensive, we won't be as competitive with the Dodgers.
And look at what Boston's money has bought them in the last 10 years. 3 championships. They spent their money right most of the time. I wish we had money to throw around like they did with Crawford and Agon and can just unload it and have all that money to put back in.
Yes, mid market teams have to be smart and keep their mistakes at minimum and big market teams can absorb a lot of mistakes. However there are countless teams that spend a ton of money that don't win anything. A lot don't even make the playoffs which is really embarrassing.
Embarrassing sure.
But I'd rather have the comfort of knowing we can spend money because actually have a bunch of great baseball minds in our front office, than know we don't have money and count down the days until our favorite players are wearing other uniforms.
Frank Wren is going to get crucified by so many uninformed Braves fans when he has to trade Kimbrel in a few years. They won't understand why he did it, most of us will. They will just complain and say he's doing a terrible job (not that it matters because JS and McGuirk are smarter than that and know the fiscal reality) but it will definitely divide the fan base.
Who wouldn't want that comfort. Still, money does not buy championships. Otherwise the Yankees would have won the last 20. It definitely is an advantage but it guarantees you nothing. You have to be smart about it. And signing a pitcher, even if he is one of the top pitchers in baseball, for 7 years usually isn't smart.
It's the not the money so much as the years. I wouldn't give any pitcher a 7 year contract.

Just got to the NLCS and probably make the WS if Hanley could grip a bat.
If they get Tanaka, they'll at least make the NLCS if not WS.
Even still, and KL said, they can afford to have bad contracts or ones that dont pan out and still be good. Other teams cant.

Money does buy you playoffs though, more often than not. And all you need to do is get in.
A lot of times it does. However The Cubs and Mets and now the Angels are examples of teams that have spent a lot and been embarrassingly bad. Yankees now are on a downward slide despite spending a ton of money. Money doesn't buy championships which is what I was responding too.
