Passan: Braves "desperately" trying to acquire draft picks

I like the strategy but would rather do it for a player already in the minor leagues.

How much money and for how many years depends on the return. I mentioned Sandoval but nobody else seemed to like it. Sandoval + a sox top 10 OF prospect for Olivera? They shed a lot of money, we take it on.

why not just use the money we would on a bad contract and throw it at Lazzarito in July.. or are we afraid of Cubans now?

WE might. He held off signing for the July 2 deadline. So maybe he has a handshake deal with us. I doubt it, but he could have signed earlier/now.

The only Cubans we should be afraid of are the over 30 variety.

I'm all for investing in young, controllable talent with upside. There's obviously risk associated with any player, but much more so with assuming the decline phase of an offensive only profile.

The Reds have Homer Bailey and Phillips.. But I wouldn't touch Bailey and Phillips would require at least a top 10 in our system.. at least..

the Rockies are interesting.. they have Reyes who is owed 48 million if you include the buyout over the next 2 years... I am sure they would want to dump that salary.. but at what cost. a draft pick is not worth that much IMO.. they would need to add more.

I think Bailey could be great candidate. If he comes back from TJ successfully he's got a ton of talent.

What about Reyes + Dahl for Aybar and Folty? Rockies LOVE velocity.

Dahl is probably too high....Maybe one of their catchers but that's enough not return for Folty and taking on that money. Not sure we could take on Reyes if he has domestic abuse in his history.

Phillips is good, but I wouldn't give up anything for him now. Not with our team and swanson/albies. I'd take him as part of a salary dump if it netted us something. But I wouldn't give up more than Jace.

I wonder if that hints that he has a handshake agreement with another team? Similar to us with maitan

he has a handshake. Otherwise he'd be hosting workouts or already signed.

Not signed now is GOOD sign for us.

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/163991546/lazaro-lazarito-armenteros-nearing-decision

The Braves, Padres and Phillies have been very aggressive on the international market and each team expects to have a solid class of prospects for the next international signing period that starts on July 2. Armenteros would have to wait until July 2 if he wanted to sign with those three clubs.

My fear with Lazarito is that he may be one of those "handled" kids. Sometimes that works. Bryce Harper. Sometimes it doesn't. Landon Powell.

I could see us doing it with the A's, honestly. Billy Butler has 2 years, $20 mil left, and the A's are the A's so having their highest paid player being that bad doesn't really work. We could dump him outright or try to dump him to another AL team for peanuts to keep the roster spot.

I would really think we could probably find something somewhere for Nick. That contract just made no sense. In retrospect it isn't a terrible one, just odd timing
