Payroll

Constructing a "bad" team with a 100M budget can be a good strategy. The idea would be to use the 100M to take on bad contracts accompanied by more useful assets. We did that with the Toussaint deal and to some extent with the Bourn/Swisher deal. Some of the details of recent deals have not been consistent with this theme. For example getting some money back in the Simmons deal. Why not accept paying Aybar's higher salary and getting more valuable prospects in return.

They also clearly dumped salary in the Maybin deal. Had they eaten all of his money they may have gotten an actual prospect back.

These last 2 deals point towards the Braves getting ready to spend on FAs. I predict Freese and a pitcher on a 3 year deal.

Freese is a giant waste of money though. The league isn't capped so I don't believe there is a minimum a team has to be spend. No point in spending any money on players at this point unless they are in the "plans" moving forward.

payroll can also be used to acquire flippable assets

The league doesn't have a minimum, but Liberty apparently does. And the league will penalize you if it is blatantly obvious you are just dumping payroll everywhere.

We probably will sign a 2nd-tier pitcher, but the idea of clearing salary to sign Freese and a 2nd-tier pitcher is . . . hardly alluring. That's putting it in the most positive light I can muster.

Any move that doesn't enhance our future plans to be competitive just feels inconsequential. Anyone we bring in now is likely to either be flip bait or long gone by the time we're ready to win.

I'm on board with the idea of rebuilding, but I'll be dipped in **** if I want to see Bourn, Swisher, AJ, and David Freese running out every day. Signing Freese or someone like him is a useless lateral move (at best) unless you're convinced he's some kind of buy-low opportunity who could end up netting you a piece that's actually got some future value.

I know they did for like the first 3 years after they bought the team. They couldn't make the payroll less than like 88 million or so. But I'm not sure if that is the case anymore.

i don't think any of this is based in fact but i would like to be proven wrong if you can

We will spend it on more Markakis type players. The 1.5-2.5 WAR player that makes like 12-15 million a year.

That's ok if you also have guys on the roster producing better bang for the buck. There will always be some positions of need where you have to pay the market price for an average player.

But it only makes sense if you are trying to win TODAY. FA signings in that range will not warrant any kind of long term deal, probably just 2-3 years, which means just when your young guys get ready (and some start to get expensive like Miller and Teheran if they are kept) then your signings are gone, leaving holes again.

Signing guys like this would be just more evidence that the FO is trying to create the illusion of respectability even at the expense of the best path on a rebuild.

Who was it on here that posted the other day they could see this happening with the new stadium and payroll being lowered.
