Phillies game 3

I would love Seager too. I don't know that we will have a lot to spend as they reportedly want to get under the luxury tax next year to reset the penalties. And trading for Soler took up a lot of the money they had to spend. I do wonder if SS breaking out makes AA more willing to trade AJSS and Waldrep. Crochet is reportedly going to be available in the off-season. Crochet is supposedly open to a long term extension which makes parting with top prospects easier to swallow. Pitching is always risky but that would have the potential to best rotation we have had since the mid 90s.

Yep. And with Acuna coming back they may not deem that SS is a problem. Crochet would fit in very nicely. I dont think they wanna trade AJSS but Waldrep could be in play along with Nancho.

I have always though Braves wouldn't resign Fried, because Braves, but is there any indication out there that suggests they might?

Haven't been following it closely.

I think the Dodgers will throw the money at Fried. Glasnow has fallen off some and their rotation isnt that great. Ohtani comes back next year but 2 TJ’s now so who knows when that arm will go.

Schwelly down to a 3.19 FIP on the season. In his last 8 starts, he has a 2.84 ERA with a 2.67 FIP.

I hate to lose Fried, but it certainly seems like we have his replacement on hand. A rotation of Sale, Strider, Schwelly, and Lopez is going to be very strong next year if everyone stays healthy.

The difference between Schwelly and all the other recent upstarts is he actually has an arsenal that profiles as an impact SP.

All signs point to Schwelly being the real deal...but probably not the TOR guy some are going to hype him as being.

At his best, he's probably a number two, and at his worst, he's probably a strong number 4.

The 2025 cap number is $241M.

Assuming the Braves pick up the options on Ozuna, TDA and Bummer, the payroll would be around $223M. Add a few million for arb guys like Kelenic, Ynoa and Laureano, and that would give AA roughly $10M-$15M to spend.

Needless to say...he isn't buying many upgrades with that amount of cash. Fried certainly isn't coming back for that.

That's barely enough money to add a real SS to the bench and leave cash for the deadline.

Yeah I thought Wily Adames was a possibility but adding Soler ruined that. Bo Bichette is owed and counts against the cap for 11 million next year. Seems like a prime target for us. Fits within the 15 million and is a short term rental coming off the worst season of his career. Crochet also made only 800k last year so his raise in arbitration should be reasonable. Fits within the budget. We are really going to pay Murphy and TDA a combined 23 million next year though. I dont know how we can justify both with Baldwin at AAA. Would be nice to go into the season with all 3 for depth but if salary is tight and we have to cut from somewhere. I trust the Braves scouts but I am really thinking Baldwin with TDA as his platoon partner for a few more years sounds pretty good. Atleast it will be a more natural platoon. Losing Murphy instead of TDA frees up 12 million in cap space and 15 million in actual salary. Despite feelings for him here he would probably still bring back a decent return.

How about Schwellenbach. Dude keeps getting better at an unreal pace. Heres his growth so far this year.

Overall - 14 starts 82 IP 10.28 k/9 1.64 BB/9 1.09 HR/9 amounting to a 3.94 ERA

Before All star break - 8 starts 44.2 IP 8.26 k/9 2.01 BB/9 0.81 HR/9 amounting to a 4.43 ERA

Since All star break - 6 starts 37.2 IP 12.66 k/9 1.19 BB/9 1.43 HR/9 amounting to a 3.35 ERA -

Last 30 days - 5 starts 31.2 IP 12.79 k/9 1.42 BB/9 0.85 HR/9 amounting to a 2.84 ERA - literally matching Sale in this stretch who is having a career year.

Last 14 days - - 3 starts 17.2 IP 12.23 k/9 2.55 BB/9 0.51 HR/9 amounting to a 3.57 ERA

Wheres the limit with this guy? He really going to k 12 per 9 and walk under 2 per 9? Even if he gives up homers at a high rate thats a recipe for a lot of success. It looks to me like he is learning its better to give up a walk sometimes than a homer. I am starting to think Max Fried is the fourth best starter on this team.

If we could get Crochet without giving up AJSS or Schwellenbach we need to do it. People may be down on Waldrep here but I think Waldrep/Nacho/Baldwin is a solid trade package. Probably would need to add Ritchie as well. And that might not even beat competing offers. These really bad teams value players that are close to the majors which all 3 certainly will be by the start of 2025. I think White Sox covet AJSS and Schwellenbach though. I think they put the rumors out there that the Braves were a potential trade partner for Crochet. You know it didnt come from the Braves.

I actually see a path for Schwelly to become a TOR pitcher.. especially with his control. But before I get into that.. any stat nerd needs to go look at the pitch info on Sale.. that is pure porn.. I didn't realize he was that good this year... I mean the numbers say.. but how do hitters actually hit that guy. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/chris-sale-519242?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb

SS has thrown 6 pitches over 100 times this year.. that means he is literally a six pitch pitcher at any given time. Now he has had many games that he doesn't throw all six and other games where he, for instance, favors his sinker over his split finger.

His 4seamer is not particularly great, but he mixes it with a cutter and a sinker at times.. or like last night more splitters (which is what he uses as his Change up I assume)
both his 4 seam and sinker sit at 95-97 mph.. his cutter sits around 92-93 and is a pretty good pitch (even though it seems to get hit, but has one of the lowest hardhit% of his mix)
His slider is actually really good.. more of a downer.. but it is late break and a great pitch. it is a true whiff pitch.
He also flashes a curve.. not sure if he is working on that as he is starting to use it more.. it is not a great pitch and wonder if they will tinker with him using it less or continue to develop it.

All that said, he is still young (24) and developing all these pitches as well as learning what mixes well. The other things I like about him are what stats don't tell us.. he doesn't seem to get all Folty out there when bad luck or error behind him happen.. he buckles down and executes.

As I have said, he is my favorite pitcher to watch right now and he has done nothing to change that.

The plate discipline is what catches my eye with Baldwin. In AAA he is walking more than he is striking out. Overall in the minors, he has a 14% BB rate compared to a 19% K-rate. Those are some pretty elite numbers for any position player, much less a catcher. His overall numbers compare pretty favorably to Adley Rutchman's minor league numbers.

Do you still have him as “just” a 3/4 or do you think he could be better than that?
