It goes back far longer than that. If I had to place a turning point I would say it was the Clinton impeachment.
I liken politics over the last 25 years to a spinning plate. At the start it spins perfectly. Then comes the first slight wobble. With each revolution the wobble gets progressively worse and worse until the plate comes crashing down.
I think Clinton's impeachment was the first wobble. Each time one party pulls something, the other party one ups them. With each revolution the wobble gets worse and worse.
Instead of someone restoring sanity we have the extremity of one party driving the other party to further extremes. This in turn drives the first party out even further in reaction.
