Pitchers' Strikeout and Walk Numbers this Spring

Expects Yuge Games
I put much more weight on regular season data (both major and minor league), but it is still fun to look at what players have done in spring training. For the pitchers, I like to look at the strikeout and walk numbers. They are the things a pitcher has most control over and are the best predictors of future performance.

Teheran 3 17
Wood 2 16 "ace" like numbers for Teheran and Wood

Hale 5 9
Garcia 5 10 ok numbers for Hale and Garcia. I think we could contend with one of them in the rotation, but not two. Hopefully, both will be surplus when Minor, Santana and Floyd return.

Buchter 5 11 (1 9 in his last five games) the numbers from the last five games are really very good
Thomas 5 11 ok but he hasn't come on in recent games the way Buchter has
Severino 4 6

Gearrin 2 9 his spring era is bad, but I think that is misleading
Varvaro 4 7
Simmons 1 6 I think he's going to be a big time player for us in a year or so. Maybe later this year
Harper 1 5 small sample to be sure, but an under the radar low draft pick guy who has done nothing but perform climbing up the minor league ladder
Schlosser 5 13 has been a pleasant surprise this spring

Graham 2 2 hard to say where he is given the rust and possible residual effects of his shoulder injury

Walden 2 5
Carpenter 1 6
Kimbrel 3 7 Our big 3 righties are about where they need to be in spring training
Avilan 3 3 continues to outperform his peripherals. Will it catch up to him someday?

Lamm, Jaime, Obispo, Vasquez have all walked a lot of hitters this spring, effectively scuttling their chances

So giddy about a top of the rotation of Teheran/Minor/Wood.

In general, once we get healthy the rotation has a chance to be really damn good.

If Santana and Floyd are our #4 and #5, and they might well be, we're going to have a great season.

I think its fairly certain that Teheran is number one, and Floyd is five. Beyond that, I almost don't care. Slot the other three in anywhere, and I'm delighted.

I liked those guys as a 2-3-4 with the departed. But I suppose Santana and Floyd keep us well in the hunt. Good contingency planning (and budget busting) by the Braves.

It also gives the Worldwide Leader a chance to fawn over the Nationals and puts a 96 win team in the posture of underrated underdog, which is laughable.

I do admit I am very optimistic about our pitching was actually starting to question if I was being objective I expect big seasons out of Julio and minor and a very good season out of Santana I think wood or Floyd as the 4 and hale or slossher(sp?) as the 5. I think we could be in the 3.3-3.5 era for a staff this year . But total disaster can also strike what if Floyd doesn't help us what if wood and hale have growing pains what if Santana is the la Santana not the kc one this division could get out of hand in a hurry we have to play well vs the Nats
