Play your talent

Right now, Gattis is 2-5 in the series with a double and two walks, so it's a bit beyond me how you take his bat out of the lineup right now.

Both suck.

The ultimate problem; and, moreover, why even someone like Bonifacio (as 50 alluded) could have helped the team, just by virtue of being an option that doesn't suck quite as much.

Even with the defense I think Gattis needs to be starting in LF. We are talking about replacing Gattis and his 2 hits 2 walks in 9 plate apperances for BJ who would probably be 0-9 in those plate appearances. Maybe a 1-9 if we were lucky. Now if we got more than a 1 run lead I would be putting BJ back in center and Heyward in right to solidify the defense. The difference between Uggla and EJ is really only defense and the fact that if Uggla gets a hit it has a much better chance of going for a homer. If we have to have a crappy offensive 2B atleast take the better defensive one. I bet Uggla would have screwed up one of the key double plays last night if he was in the game.

I agree with you regarding Gattis versus BJ Upton, but I don't necessarily think Johnson is much of a defensive improvement at 2B over Uggla; hell, he's already booted a key ball in this series.

Gattis has to be in the line-up. Fredi rolled the dice on Johnson over Uggla thinking Johnson brought a couple of things at the margins that would help. Fredi was probably wrong, but again, if Uggla wasn't having whatever problems he's been having Fredi could have left the dice in his pocket. For all any of us know, there may be something seriously wrong with Uggla's vision.

Didn't Mac have some problems after his LASIK? It was never this horrible, but I remember someone having issues with it.

Some of you are so funny. If Uggla had been on the roster and starting and was 0-fer with 5 K's you would be saying at least EJ gives us a chance at a productive out...he should be in there. Both suck. Uggla had plenty of opportunity to claim his spot but EJ did just enough good things late to get the nod. Batting 8th in the lineup, with speed and a chance to be a situational hitter isn't the end of the world for a weak hitting middle infielder. We don't need him to be a hero.

Are you the same diesel on Hawksquawk? J/W

Agree 100 percent. Basically im fine with Gattis vs Upton right now (2014 is another thing entirely) but as horrid as Uggla is, id rather have him than Keith Lockhart version 2013

EJ is normally much better at second overall than Uggla (10 DRS this year for EJ in a lot less innings vs -19 for Uggla, worst among second basemen). But regular season aside, EJ hasn't been good defensively this series so far. He booted a ball as you note, and dropped a throw (albeit bad throw but still misplayed) that if caught he has a shot to nail the runner at the plate. Further, EJ is still a much better defender at second than Uggla. I think he has played nervous being put in a position he's not use to. We just have to hope he settles down and starts playing good defense again. He sure isn't in there for his bat, regardless to what Fredi thinks (Fredi bunting Simmons for EJ).

That said, the BJ Upton over Gattis is crazy talk. I keep hearing about how Gattis misplayed a ball in game one. But Heyward also set up that situation or Gattis plays that ball differently. So there were mistakes that inning by multiple players that led to the run. And that doesn't even get into debating how you handle the number 8 hitter with the pitcher on deck.

There hasn't been much discussion of what Fredi SHOULD have done in the seventh. Imo, the optimal course would have been to let Simmons hit away. Then depending on the situation, consider having EJ bunt.

Can we bring Glenn Hubbard in to teach Uggs how to play 2B?

What were Kelly's, Prado's, and Giles' defensive ratings under Glenn Hubbard?

Agreed. Simmons had already gotten a big hit in the game too. Plus Simmons has looked better at the plate than some others so far. I hated how that went down but I mentioned my fear about it happening before the series (reread my PMs where I mentioned Fredi and his bunting, etc). Thankfully this time Heyward got to hit later and came through with two outs after Reed Johnson was walked. Further, Simmons also was forced to bunt in last year's Wild Card game. But even after Fredi confirmed he had called it after the game everyone still blamed Simmons (rookie mistake no way a manager calls that, etc).

I'd argue that CJ was our offensive MVP so far, although Gattis has been solid.

EJ is 0-7 with 4 Ks. The number of hits isn't the thing. Justin is 0-7 but has made some solid contact. 7 ABs is a tiny sample, but EJ just looks hopeless at the plate.

Yeah, he looks like Uggla.
