Playoffs Thread

How is it possible that Verlander was able to pitch like that last night. Don't The Twins frequently insist that north of 30 is immediate downward trend? Then McCann should be washed up too.

HOF players usually play well north of their 30's. Most players aren't HOF level. Unless you suggest the Braves only target future HOFers then avoiding most players post 30 on long deals is a good idea.

Well, I'm happy that my willingness to trade something for Verlander seemingly would have worked out ok. Not that he was ever going to accept a trade to Atlanta.

I think a lot of teams are wary of pitchers north of 30 and that will likely become even keener in an era of big fastballs. But great pitchers can go on well past 30 because of whatever magic pixie dust is infused in their system. Verlander is a classic "pitch forward" guy who while not having pristine control does throw high-quality strikes consistently at a velocity that doesn't allow hitters to tee off. Even if he tails off a bit, he'll still be a guy who can give you a ton of solid innings. He has clearly dialed it up a notch since coming over to the Astros.

Early 30's are fine. I think you have to take it on a case by case basis. Verlander has a special arm. It will probably hold up long term but the rest of his body wont.

A declining Verlander in his 30s is still a very good pitcher.

That was a stupid comment, even for someone as dumb as knuckleheadsie.

It's the last part. He's rejuvenated since joining the Astros. Consistently 96-97 and hitting his spots.
