Postseason Thread

Ozzie Smith was once the highest paid player in the game and most of that was predicated on his defense. But that was a different era and it would be surprising to me if Heyward got close to $30 MM AAV with his power numbers where they are. I think he had a very solid season and the power may return, but that would be the risk a team would take. Heyward's never going to hurt a team, but at some point ROI may get dicey if he continues as a < 20 HR guy.

That's all true. But you can help a team a ton of ways without having a big homerun total. A lot of what he does just doesn't show up in your typical stat sheet. But he will certainly be a good study on how front offices actually value players like Heyward and defense in general.

I'm thinking he gets valued as a 4 WAR player and the going rate this off-season for position players will be around $7M/WAR. I believe I'm being conservative on both scores.

Last year:

Pablo Sandoval 3.4 WAR
Hanley Ramirez 3.5 WAR

at $7M per year the Red Sox would be paying them $49M/year combined. As it is, they are paying them an average of $40M combined. I would say that since it is likely that the GM and Sox leadership was aware of the $/WAR approach and probably used it as part of their determinations, then they should be asked how they feel about it.

But, then I remembered.....

A couple of things to note. Were they paying Sandoval to be a 3.4 WAR player even if that's what he was in 2014? Just like when looking at traditional stats it's important to not simply go off what that player did in their walk year and look at the previous years as well and also what you expect the player to do going farther. And the 7 million per War is based around your average 2 WAR player. The higher you go up the War scale the less per year you should have to pay. It's why someone like Trout and Stanton are making 30 million or so a year and not 40+.

Exactly the point.

Man does not live by War alone. He must use his senses and intuition as well and even then things may not turn out right.

GM's live on projected WAR

If they do that exclusively then they are soon out of a job.

Look at the Panda signing. Did anyone really think that was going to work out?

At least the Ramirez signing can be somewhat explained away by suggesting that he was certainly athletic enough to transition positions.

So you expected him to no longer be the 2.5 WAR player he had been the last 3 years and to instantly crater and pull a BJ Upton? Someone needs to hire you for their FO if you can predict those things.

I certainly had NO faith that he would be worth anywhere near what he was paid and that his production would tail off. Did I expect the complete face plant? No. But, that's not the point. To look at the Panda and say that's where I want to park my 16M/year 95M total contract was just pure insanity.

Stroman pitched well. No one is going to question the Price move, and if they win it's going to be a huge plus for Toronto.
