I remember reading/hearing that he credited maybe manny machado for the success for getting his foot down quicker or something similar. Any of you technically sound baseball guys care to check if there was a mechanical change?
No use in worrying about this.
Fernando Tatis dad did it. If he is this guy without the juice then like wupk said that'll be one less hole to fill in the offseason.I remember reading/hearing that he credited maybe manny machado for the success for getting his foot down quicker or something similar. Playoff ineligibility is barely a punishment if the team doesn’t qualify for the playoffs.Big brain move for Profar to get busted in a lost season.
Here it is...
"...Profar, a switch-hitter, began lifting his front leg higher at the start of his swing. He said advice from former major leaguer Fernando Tatis and work with San Diego outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. last offseason helped convince him to make the change, which added power to his swing...."

Yeah, tatis is full of advice haha
Good stuff right here. Should be interesting to see how it plays out.We know Profar saw a jump in average EV from ~87 to ~91 last year, and that was the metric to watch to determine if his improvements were "real".
In a small number of AAA PAs his average EV was 86.5, so not a good sign.
Then he hit the ball 100, 105 and 106 last night, which was a very good sign. However, he's always been able to pop ~110 EVs, even when he sucked, so those EVs last night weren't anything out of the ordinary.
The claim is that he decided to swing harder, but the average bat speed metrics don't agree: 71.0 in 2023, up to 71.7 in 2024, and down to 68.9 so far this year. Obviously this year is a laughably small sample size.
Just looking at his EV on liners and fly balls:
2021: 89.5
2022: 90.2
2023: 90.0
2024: 93.1
2025: 91.5
The 2025 value is obviously meaningless, but there is no doubt something made him hit the ball significantly harder last year. My guess is anyone who chooses believe it wasn't the roids is being willingly naive, and we are going to see the 700-750 OPS version of Profar rather than the juiced up 840 OPS version. More balls in play will give us a better idea which one we get to watch for 3 years.
But that's ok, because even a hitter who's average or slightly below is still a massive upgrade over the 500 OPS sub-replacement level hitters we were watching before he came back. It really can't be overstated just how bad the bottom 4 of the lineup has been this year.
