Now that we're through the non-waiver trade deadline, I thought it would be interesting to look at the roster management situation we'll face going into the offseason. I've broken out sections below for those I feel will be released, those that are locks to be on the roster, and those that are on the bubble. Some of the placements are, of course, debatable.
A few preliminary conclusions . . .
- With this setup, 3 bubble players would need to go. For me, it would be Castro, Banuelos (out of options), and Ramirez (out of options)
- If we decide to call up Swanson, Albies, or Minter . . . that may be at the expense of 3 other bubble spots.
- Another alternative to manage the roster is trades. 12 of the players in the projection are starting pitchers. That seems to be the place where we have some depth to trade from.
Locked into 40-man spots (34)
Currently on 40-man: Freddie Freeman, Julio Teheran, Matt Kemp, Nick Markakis, Tyler Flowers, Hunter Cervenka, Aaron Blair, Akeel Morris, Arodys Vizcaino, Chris Withrow, Paco Rodriguez, Ian Krol, Ender Inciarte, Daniel Winkler, Shae Simmons, Jace Peterson, Mike Foltynewicz, Matt Wisler, Williams Perez, Mallex Smith, Jesse Biddle, John Gant, Mauricio Cabrera, Tyrell Jenkins, Rob Whalen, Adonis Garcia
Added for Rule 5 Protection: Lucas Sims, Rio Ruiz, Max Fried
Acquisitions on MLB Deals: [Veteran Starter], [Veteran Catcher], [Veteran 3B], [Veteran RH Reliever], [Veteran Bench Piece]
On the bubble (9)
Currently on 40-man: Daniel Castro, Manny Banuelos, Matt Marksberry, Jose Ramirez
Added for Rule 5 Protection: Johan Camargo, Jason Hursh, Steve Janas, Connor Lien
Acquisitions on MLB Deals: [Rule 5 Pick]
Almost certainly gone (8)
Brandon Snyder, Joel De La Cruz, Anthony Recker, Chase d'Arnaud, Casey Kelly, Andrew McKirahan, Ryan Weber, Brandon Cunniff
