Projecting the offseason 40-man roster

I think Biddle might be removed.

Also you have Chris Withrow on both your lock and bubble lists.

Added for Rule 5 Protection: Lucas Sims, Rio Ruiz, Max Fried
Acquisitions on MLB Deals: [Veteran Starter], [Veteran Catcher], [Veteran 2B / 3B], [Veteran RH Reliever], [Veteran Bench Piece]

With there being (potentially) 5 open spots, that's not entirely a dire situation for the bubble players. That is, if they aspire to continue their careers as Braves. Reason being that especially bullpen and bench help can wait until spring. As we all know, it's also possible for some of them to get invites back as non-roster players.

Unless there's some no-brainer player being exposed in the Rule 5 draft, they're going to have to start getting into the position of not exploring that as a resource. Teams, serious about contending, don't utilize this tactic. In fact, if somebody is ambitious enough here, it might be useful to post selections from the last 15-20 years, just to see if there have been many finds. The Marlins picked up our old pal, Uggla, this way. Don't think it's exactly been a potential gold mine though.

Thanks. Corrected Withrow and moved Biddle down . . . that's probably where he belongs. Maybe they'll be able to get a look at Biddle in the AFL? Withrow is out of options and 2nd year arb eligible. As far as out of options middle relievers, I'd probably rather keep Chaz Roe over Withrow.

Is Swanson anywhere on your list? I don't see him.

Agree that I think you're wrong about Recker; has been a big help to young pitchers at a good cost. Also feel d'Arnaud may stick around, possibly as minor league invite.

Agree about Minter. Also 100 percent chance he is non-roster invite to spring training.

I have a feeling Albies will get a September call-up.

Even dumber than bringing up Swanson was.

Somewhere along the lines this offseason, and we may not even know when it happens, the Braves will have to expose a player or two or five that they don't want to expose and/or they will have an opportunity (finishing last means being first here) to benefit from someone else's inability to protect all the players that they would like to protect.

If you are a rebuilding team, you need to keep that roster flexibility in case an opportunity arises.

I don't disagree. But I suspect JC's recent trip to watch Mississippi might be related to September call-ups.

We don't have many players worth protecting. I'm not worried about it from the 40 man standpoint.

On the readiness idea, I agree.

I'm not either. There are a lot of guys on our 40 man who are going to be traded this offseason or released. Maybe next offseason we'll have to make tough decisions, but we have a lot of filler right now.

Good synopsis. I think the congestion may warrant a couple of 2-for-1 deals (we sending 2, getting 1) where we are sending a couple of mid-tier prospects for a more reliable contributor.

I think we'll see Boscan in September to get a better read on him. I think Roe has done enough to hang around. I'm a Camargo fan and think he's a good enough prospect to be protected, but that's going to depend on a lot of things. Lien has great tools, but his contact rate is really bad. I might move Williams Perez to the bubble (he is shaped like one after all).

Missed this: on September 3rd, Braves outrighted Kyle Kubitza, Madison Younginer and Wil Boscan, clearing three spots on the 40-man roster. All three cleared waivers and accepted assignment to Gwinnett and are playing in the postseason.

I mean, I'm pretty sure our FO understands the way the 40-man roster works. So I think it's safe to say if they call someone up who goes on the 40-man, they're ok with what that means regarding having to avoid protecting someone.

In addition to the 31 locks you list, the nine I would add are:

1. Veteran Backup/Platoon IF (KJ to be specific, who would also be our primary lefty pinch hitter)
2. Veteran 4th/5th outfielder (Francoeur to be specific, who can give Muk a day off against tough lefties and be our primary righty pinch hitter)
3. Withrow
4. Castro
5. Marksberry
6. Ramirez
7. Recker
8. Weber
9. Rule 5 pick

I'm also thinking Chase D'Arnaud, McKirahan and Biddle will be brought back on minor league contracts.

Collmenter has an option on his contract. Very affordable. No brainer; he's safe.
