Just about every big time race riot during the 20th century took place in the north, or at least north of the "old south". I would call that more of a north/south thing than a liberal/conservative thing but it's certainly a fact that is often overlooked. I don't even have to leave my own state, the Tulsa Race Riots of the early 1920s can rival just about anything Selma, Alabama could muster and if you've never been to Tulsa, they're more like being "up north" attitude wise than they are to be "down south", at least that's how they always seemed to me.
