Is there a country that exists that you think is less racist?

I think teaching that humans are flawed is always a good thing. Thomas Jefferson was a bright man who did many great deeds. But he also was a rapist and slaver. Abraham Lincoln did many great things, and committed war crimes. Humans should not be deified. All humans have flaws.

My question was very specific

I think talking about how evil America is but being unable to point to a better model is pretty telling

I firmly disagree. There are two main issues with that I take with this:

1) It is a misrepresentation of the argument to claim that the Left wants to teach that America is wholly and uniquely evil. There seems to be some weird false dichotomy set up that we either teach that America is completely awesome and unimpeachable or we teach that America is awful and must be destroyed. That’s not true, though. America has some serious warts and we should teach that in history classes without sugar coating it.

2) It’s not “telling” that the rest of the world has been bad. We’re supposed to be teaching history, not grading it on a curve. This point of the world being bad also cuts against the argument of American Exceptionalism, which is a big talking point on the Right. You can’t teach that America is exceptional, then just ignore all the parts that were just like the rest of the world.

What I think gets misrepresented the most in the framing of teaching American History is that we must come to a conclusion of whether or not America is good or bad, when it’s not quite that simple. The values preached by the Founding Fathers are good, but ring hollow when they proceeded to enslave others and commit a genocide to gain land. On the other hand, our Republic helped pave the way for other countries to have more freedoms. It’s a mixed bag, and teaching it as anything else is disingenuous.

there's not a single person with a rational mind in this country who doesn't want to teach the history of slavery.

that's just nonsense.

what we don't want to teach is that America is this evil enterprise... and that black kids have no chance because of the oppression they face every day in this country. it's just bull****. it hurts black kids to teach them they are victims.

america is the least racist country that has ever existed. there is more diversity in the country than any other in the world. the success of minorities in this country has not been experienced in any other country to this level in the world.

you wanna cry everyday about stuff that is history and not relevant today. where does that lead us? to segregation at uc Berkley and white teachers getting fired first in Minneapolis.

you are a joke

I asked a legit question.

Did all of y’all not get taught this?

My kids are.

We were taught about slavery, but many feel the gravity of that is not fully accounted for. For me the objection is to reactionary projects like the 1776 Report that wish to frame American History under a lens of patriotism.

We learned slavery was a stain on our history.

Not sure what you learned.

are we supposed to be walking around in 2022 feeling this endless sense of guilt with decisions we had no part in?

I am not going to apologize for the crimes of others I had nothing to do with.

slavery is over. its time to embrace that, celebrate it, and let the people know they have every chance to succeed in this country as anyone else

For some reason we need to endlessly talk about it and then give people an excuse for acting like criminals.
