Race

This is what systemic racism looks like. White woman calls 911 on a black man. She says he is "looking at cars" when the fact is he was only doing anything with 1 car, his own. She never claimed he forced entry. She never claimed he took anything from the vehicle. Yet, with no crime alledged the black man is now the slave of this cop. Forced to follow his orders like a dog. Do people not understand why this would be upsetting to a black man who was minding his own business to just be randomly approached by a cop, now needing to prove he didnt commit a crime no one has alleged he committed? Cops dont care, these false accusations give them the legal cover to search and detain a person. The victim didnt handle this very well though. What he should have done was complied, then when its sorted out tell the cop you are being harassed by this person and you want to file a police report and you need her information so that he can sue her in civil court.

Two members of the Virginia Military Institute’s Board of Visitors resigned Thursday, shortly before the group voted to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson from its prominent location by the student barracks.

It is unclear why Thomas “Teddy” Gottwald, the chairman of a petroleum additives holding company who graduated from VMI in 1983, and Grover Outland III, a senior vice president and general counsel of a consulting and government contracting firm, resigned. They offered no reasons, according to a school spokesman, Bill Wyatt.

Asked why he had quit, Outland, a 1981 VMI graduate who was just appointed this year for a four-year term, did not explain. “I completely support VMI and its Board of Visitors,” he said in an email, “and I plan to assist the Institute and the Board in any way possible, moving forward.”

Gottwald, who was appointed in 2018 and whose term was set to expire in 2022, offered a similar statement, saying that he supported the board and VMI and that “I will help them in any way I can going forward.”

Gottwald and Outland quit right before the board’s unanimous vote to move the Jackson statue to a new, undetermined location. Jackson, an enslaver of six people, taught at VMI before helping to lead the Confederate Army.

Cast a net across the top tiers of pro racing's various disciplines—F1, NASCAR, IndyCar, WEC, WRC, and so on—and you'll haul in some seriously fast drivers. But level the playing field, and who's really the fastest of them all? That was the elevator pitch behind IROC, the original all-star racing series that ran between 1973 and 2006. This summer, Tony Stewart and NASCAR heavyweight Ray Evernham announced a plan to revive the concept as a six-race, short-track spectacular in 2021, which seemed ambitious given how uncertainty still rules the day.

No news has come since—but I caught up with Evernham at this weekend's Classic 24 Hour at Daytona, and the NASCAR Hall of Famer confirmed the series is still a go. As with the rest of the world, planning has been slowed a bit by the pandemic. Evernham said to expect announcements about scheduling, TV partners and tracks, likely in December. “We are waiting until NASCAR and IndyCar release their schedules,” he said, so they’ll know if and when drivers are available to race in the new series.
